John Walters Backs a Mexican Proposal Far More Sweeping Than U.S. Measures He Has Opposed.
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) -
The Marijuana Policy Project today congratulated White House "drug czar" John Walters for backing a Mexican government proposal that would remove criminal penalties for possession of small amounts of marijuana.
"I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but John Walters is right," said MPP executive director Rob Kampia. "We heartily second his support for eliminating criminal penalties for marijuana users in Mexico, and look forward to working with him to end such penalties in the U.S. as well."
On October 22nd, The New York Times reported Walters' public support for a drug decriminalization proposal by Mexican President Felipe Calderon, quoting Walters as saying, "I don't think that's legalization." Under Calderon's proposal, individuals caught with small quantities of marijuana would receive no jail sentence or fine and would not receive a criminal record so long as they complete either drug education or, if addicted, drug treatment.

`Middle Ground` on the Issue of Illegals?
Commentary by Neal Feldman Salem-News.com
INS and ICE refuse to do their jobs. What are we even paying them for? To drink coffee and eat donuts?
(SALEM, Ore.) -
I keep hearing folks talk about finding 'middle ground' on the subject of illegal immigrants (not all immigrants just the illegal ones mind you... those here illegally). What does that mean? Let's use another criminal activity, say bank robbery, to highlight the points.
Would middle ground with bank robbers mean no jail time and they get to keep most of the money? That sure sounds like a great deal for the bank robbers and it sure does 'compromise' the laws of the land to their benefit, but is it sound public policy? Wouldn't such merely increase, in all likelihood, future bank robbery?

Respecting Heritage Means Multiple Languages and Cultures
Perspective by Tim King Salem-News.com
Spanish was spoken in the United States long before English.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
Some people believe that politics are more important than quality of life. Isn't that what the debate about illegal immigration is about after all? Isn't it about the lines on a map overruling the importance of a child's hunger?
You have to truly be OK with people's suffering in order to justify anger over "illegal immigration" in my opinion. The only reason people come here is to work and improve their lives and my heart can't condemn a man for trying to feed his kids, not as long as I live. To the contrary, I wish every good hard working man and woman in this world great success.
