Coast Guard Rescues Four Surfers in Newport, Oregon

Depending on the conditions, Oregon can be an extremely dangerous place to surf, especially for novices.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Coast Guard helicopter Coast Guard rescue crews headed for a popular surfing area on the south side of Yaquina Head, in Newport, Oregon Wednesday, to rescue four surfers who were trapped on rocks at the base of Yaquina Head.

The Coast Guard at Yaquina Bay received a call at 5:00 p.m. from 911 asking for assistance in the rescue of the four men. Just less than 30 minutes later, at 5:27 p.m., an HH-65C Dolphin helicopter crew from the Coast Guard Air Facility in Newport, was launched to fly a short distance and assist the men.

Trolling Oregon`s Coastline in the Post-Dramamine Era

There’s plenty of bounty off our coast, and my wife would love to have more fish in our freezer.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Newport, Oregon Fishing on the ocean has never been my favorite thing. As a kid (and as a young adult) I can clearly remember spending ocean trips leaning over the rail feeding the fish. That exhausting queezy feeling just wasn’t something I looked forward to repeating. However, I also like fresh fish in my freezer, so a compromise had to be made.

My buddy Scott recently organized a tuna trip off the Oregon Coast. This caused me to face my fears head on. I learned that the days of Dramamine are now over, and the new anti-motion sickness drug of choice is called Meclazine.

50-Foot Vessel Runs Aground in Newport, Oregon

Coast Guard responds to fishing vessel grounding near Newport, Oregon.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Lori Ann  aground at Newport, Oregon 8-11-09 The 50-foot fishing vessel Lori Ann (ex Little Linda) ran aground on Nye Beach near Newport, Oregon, Tuesday, August 11, 2009.

The Lori Ann had a crew of two people and was carrying approximately 1,800 gallons of diesel fuel when it ran onto a soft sand beach at approximately 2:00 a.m.

Depoe Bay Shark Confirmed as Great White (PHOTOS)

Under State and Federal law, it is unlawful to take or possess Great White Sharks.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Division is continuing the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the possession of what is confirmed as a 12-foot Great White Shark in the Depoe Bay area this weekend.

OSP Sergeant Todd Thompson says an OSP Fish & Wildlife Division trooper was working on the Depoe Bay docks August 8, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. when a shark was brought in by a recreational tuna boat.

Six injured in Head On Collision East of Newport (PHOTOS)

The crash investigation continues and police say criminal charges are being investigated.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - Injury crash, Newport, Oregon 8-7-09 Police say six people were injured, one critically, in a head on traffic collision on Thursday, August 6th about 7:00 a.m.

Senior Trooper Carla Urbigkeit of the Newport Area Command, says a 1998 Ford passenger car was westbound on Highway 20 at about milepost 32 when it drifted onto the right shoulder and struck the guardrail. "It then veered into the oncoming lane where it struck an eastbound 2005 Pontiac van head on," Urbigkeit said.

Newport, Oregon Will be NOAA`s New Marine Operations Center in the Pacific

Verger Praises Selection of Oregon coast harbor town.

(COOS BAY, Ore.) - Vessel in the Bay at Newport, Oregon Senator Joanne Verger (D-District 5), representing the Oregon coast from Lincoln City to Coos Bay, praised the selection today of the Port of Newport as the newest home of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association’s Marine Operations Center in the Pacific.

“This is monumental news for our coast and for our state,” said Verger.

Endangered Sharks Get Oregon Aquarium Spotlight (AUDIO)

The aquarium events run through August 8th.

(NEWPORT, Ore. ONS) - Oregon Coast Aquarium It is "Shark Week" at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport. Oregon waters are home to about 15 shark species. Five of them can be seen at the aquarium, where visitors can watch them feed and learn more about their role in the ocean ecosystem.

Scientists say that, like many other aquatic species, sharks have been over-fished, and some types are endangered. Aquarium spokesperson Cindy Hanson says one of the biggest threats to sharks is a practice known as "finning."

Oregon Traffic Problems Slow Travel

The affected areas are Highway 20 near Toledo, I-84 between Baker and Lagrande, and Burns, where a fatal crash scene is now clear.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Two highways are seriously jammed and a fatal crash has claimed the life of a Crane, Oregon woman. Officials ask that anyone traveling through the affected areas use caution and take detour routes when possible.

Oregon State Police report that the Eastbound lanes of Interstate - 84 from milepost 260 near Lagrande, to milepost 302 at Baker, are closed due to a commercial motor vehicle crash with hazardous materials. Oregon's Highway 20 should expect up to twenty minute delays or use Oregon 180, the Eddyville-Blodgett Highway, as an alternate route.

Oregon Coast Climate Conference Coincides with World Oceans Day (AUDIO)

This week, the Oregon Senate is expected to decide on a bill to study six prospective marine reserve areas for the Oregon coast that could eventually be part of a national reserve system.

(NEWPORT, Ore. ONS) - A view from Oregon's magnificent Cape Lookout. Today's celebration of "World Oceans Day" is especially timely for Oregon this year, as the Oregon Shores Coastal Climate Action Conference gets underway in Newport. For both events, a major topic is healthy oceans and climate change.

A biologist and keynote speaker at the Newport conference, Dr. Jennifer Hoffman studies how marine ecosystems adapt to changing climate conditions.
