Captain John Hoffman is one of the people from the Oregon National Guard aviation unit that I was embedded with in Iraq this past summer. In fact, John was my contact person with the squadron.

Marine Jet Crashes Near San Diego Killing 3 (VIDEO)

Miramar spokeswoman 1st Lt. Katheryn Putnam, said the pilot was in stable condition at a naval hospital in San Diego.

(SAN DIEGO) - Plane crash in San Diego A tragic military fighter jet crash killed two people near San Diego today. The jet reportedly was preparing to land at the Marine Air Base at Miramar, when it crashed into a densely populated San Diego neighborhood. At least two people were killed as the jet slammed into three houses Monday, but the pilot was able to eject before crashing.

The Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, reports that the F/A-18D Hornet's pilot did eject safely.

Three homes were destroyed, Fire Department spokesman Maurice Luque told reporters. Three and a half hours after the plane crashed, firefighters were hosing down the crash where smoke still rose in the air. About 20 homes saw residents evacuated, with no certainty as to when they would be allowed to return.

`Camp Homebound` Peace Activists Meet With Oregon Officials (VIDEO)

The group was told that if a million Oregonians got behind their effort, they might be able to stop the scheduled deployment to Iraq.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Peace activists Michele Darr and Peter Bergel embrace after an their first meeting with public officials Members of a peace vigil called 'Camp Homebound', organized to prevent Oregon Guard forces from deploying to Iraq next year, spent time with Oregon state officials Friday in a highly anticipated meeting where the group was allowed to express its point of view.

Members of the 24-hour fast and vigil say the meeting leaves them with hope. Darr said she was moderately surprised that state officials allowed the meeting to take place, but she also says she has been confident that they would. She says she will continue this effort until they can effect a change.

Video of Fishing Vessel Network`s Capsizing Released

The Coast Guard released the clip of the tragic incident in Tillamook Bay today.

(TILLAMOOK, Ore.) - Coast Guard 47-foot motor lifeboat crew from Station Tillamook Bay The U.S. Coast Guard has released video of a tragic capsizing that took place early last Friday morning in Oregon's Tillamook Bay. The heart wrenching scenes were recorded by a Coast Guard volunteer named Sherry Newman.

In one clip, we see the fishing vessel Network struck by a large wave while the crew was struggling to make headway in the tremendous surf, very close to the end of the north jetty at the mouth of Tillamook Bay.

The Coast Guard 47-foot motor lifeboat that responded to aid the Network stayed very close during the ordeal. It seems amazing that the Coast Guard boat was actually there as the tragedy occurred. It speaks to the extreme conditions that overtook the fishing vessel.

Security Council Condemns ‘Reprehensible ’Terrorist Attacks in Mumbai (VIDEO)

(NEW DELHI ) - The Taj Hotel at Mumbai The United Nations Security Council has strongly condemned the terrorist attacks in Mumbai that started on November 26th, which included the taking of hostages and caused numerous deaths and injuries in India’s financial capital.

“The members of the Security Council expressed their condolences to the families of the victims and to the people and Government of India,” the 15-member body said in a statement issued to the press last night.

The attacks, which by Thursday had stretched into their third day, targeted two major hotel complexes and several other locations in India’s largest city, leaving at least 140 people dead and more than 300 wounded. Rescue operations are still ongoing to try to free the remaining hostages.

(SALEM, Ore.) - people on bench Several years ago, my husband, Bill, and I were listening to Arlo Guthrie’s Thanksgiving classic, “Alice’s Restaurant.” This song tells the story of a Thanksgiving celebration with hilarious and unforeseen consequences, including an arrest for littering and an impact on Mr. Guthrie’s experience with the Vietnam War draft.

Bill and I have been listening to the song every year since we met nearly twenty years ago, but on Thanksgiving Day, 2004, I felt as though I was hearing part of it for the first time.

Earlier in the spring of that year, after dipping my toes into the waters of politics in Maryland, Bill and I decided to pack up and move our family to Oregon. Our primary reason for moving was so that I could take the medicine I need, cannabis, without breaking the law.

Robot Technology Making Strides (VIDEO)

The robots of yesterday's movies are today's reality. Some are modeled after men, some are fashioned like dogs, others are created to look like beautiful women. They walk, show facial expression, carry on conversations, and identify objects.

(SALEM, Ore.) - robots The technology to build various types of robots has been around for a while, but ideas have really emerged in recent years along with microprocessors, particularly in the U.S., Japan and Korea. The various robot projects under development throughout the world are amazing.

The videos featured here show a variety of these new creations and they offer a clear idea of where this is going. Designers say extremely lifelike robots will soon be able to serve in numerous capacities that range from household duties to security.

One of the robots called Aiko, is capable of speech, reading, distinguishing color, recognizing faces and identifying objects.
