The State Library's Talking Book and Braille Services Honors Our Veterans with the Gift of Reading

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Digital book players One year ago veterans across the country were the first to receive the new digital talking book players from their regional libraries for the blind and print disabled.

Federal law requires that veterans be the top priority recipients of talking book library services delivered by most state libraries in partnership with the National Library Service for the Blind and Physically Handicapped at the Library of Congress.

Reward Offered to Help Solve Unlawful Shooting of Elk in Rural Clatsop County

(ASTORIA, Ore.) - Elk illegally killed in Clatsop County Oregon Oregon State Police (OSP) Fish and Wildlife Division troopers from the Astoria Area Command office are asking for the public's help to identify the suspect(s) responsible for an illegal shooting of an elk in rural Clatsop County last weekend. A reward of up to $500 for information leading to an arrest in this case is being offered by the Oregon Hunters Association Turn in a Poacher (T.I.P.) Program.

According to Trooper Jim O'Connor, on October 30, 2010, OSP Fish and Wildlife Division troopers responded to a report of a wounded cow elk on the Youngs River mainline near milepost 6. The elk had been shot with a firearm and the meat was salvaged by OSP troopers.

Sixth Albany Community Summit on Homelessness

(ALBANY, Oregon) - Salem-News.com The sixth Albany area summit on homelessness will happen Wednesday, from 9 a.m.-noon at Albany City Hall, 333 Broadalbin Street SW. Representatives of organizations and agencies that work directly with Albany's homeless and low-income residents will attend, with this year's focus on the "new homeless:" those in or near homelessness due to the ongoing economic downturn.

Rick Crager, deputy director of Oregon Housing and Community Services, will give a keynote address. Groups and individuals involved in initiatives in the Albany area will give updates on those projects including supportive housing for women in transition; a new children's dental clinic; and the Adult Services Team that works with individuals or couples who have been hard to house.

Portland Police Arrest Raymond Hetman

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Raymond Hetman Portland East Precinct Officers stopped a vehicle last night at approximately 6:00 p.m. near Southeast 168th Avenue and Southeast Powell Boulevard. Officers received information that 27-year-old Raymond Hetman was in the vehicle prior to being stopped by police.

Hetman had a Parole Violation Warrant and was being sought for questioning by police with regard to Kidnap allegations made by his girlfriend.
