Merkley`s Bill to Ban Animal Torture Videos Passes Senate

Ban sends message that horrifying videos of animals being tortured and killed for human sexual gratification will not be allowed.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Senator Jeff Merkley The Animal Crush Video Prohibition Act of 2010, a bill introduced this week by Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley, passed the Senate unanimously Tuesday evening.

The bipartisan bill, cosponsored by Senators Jon Kyl (R-AZ) and Richard Burr (R-NC), criminalizes the creation, sale, distribution, advertising, marketing, and exchange of animal crush videos.

"The torture and killing of animals for pleasure and profit is absolutely unacceptable," Merkley said.

Owls and Grouse and Wolves, Oh My!

(SALEM, Ore.) - Karla Kay Edwards State and federal endangered species listings have greatly influenced the economies and culture of Oregon’s communities for decades. Ironically, they have had relatively little success in actually influencing the species they want to recover. Still, government agencies refuse to abandon their monocular vision of individual species recovery. Broader policy objectives and market-oriented approaches would allow the integration of management decisions which address multiple species and other surrounding issues that hinder recovery. This can be achieved by returning the power of conservation to local and private entities that are more effective stewards of the environment.

Umpqua River Lighthouse not required for safe navigation

Specific plans for the disposition of the lighthouse will be made at a later time. There are currently no plans to remove the historic Fresnel lens from the lighthouse

(Seattle, WA) - Umpqua River Lighthouse The U. S. Coast Guard is releasing a Waterways Analysis and Management System report on the Umpqua River in Oregon which states that the Umpqua River Lighthouse is not required for safe navigation. This determination opens the door for the U.S. Coast Guard to begin the process to discontinue the Umpqua River Light as a federal aid to navigation.

The review included multiple surveys from local waterway users, as well as consultation with commercial towing companies, the Port of Umpqua, and other local entities. The majority of respondents indicated the Umpqua River Light is a secondary, or backup aid to navigation.

Portland Police Investigate Stabbing In NW Portland

Detectives are responding and will continue the investigation.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Stabbing Investigation This evening, Tuesday September 28, 2010, at approximately 9:21 p.m., Portland Police officers responded to the 600 Block of Northwest 10th Avenue on the report of a stabbing.

Officers arrived in the area to find the 31-year-old male victim bleeding from the neck with a stab wound. The victim was transported to OHSU with a non-life-threatening injury.

Keizer fire prevention week open house

(KEIZER, Ore.) - One of Keizer, Oregons newer fire engines The Keizer Fire District will hold its Annual Fire Prevention Week Open House on Monday, October 4, 2010. Hours of the Open House are 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.

Visitors will be able to see apparatus displays and get valuable fire safety information. In addition visitors can participate in fun activities and enjoy refreshments.
