Urgent Weather Message for Western Oregon and Coastal Waters

Batten down the hatches! A late spring storm is kicking up.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - weather An unusually strong frontal system for mid-June will move through northwest Oregon and southwest Washington on Thursday, producing strong winds across the area.

High winds along the coast are expected to gust between 40 and 50 mph, with the strongest gusts along the beaches and headlands. Over the higher terrain of the coastal mountains and the Cascades, winds could gust up to around 45 mph. This system will bring south gales from the south coast northward, and hazardous seas bringing small craft advisory level seas over most of the area. The hazardous conditions will persist into Friday morning.

Old McKenzie Pass Highway Opens for Summer Season

Drivers are urged to use caution ...it's a fun but very narrow road.

(BEND, Ore.) - Dee Wright Observatory The Old McKenzie Pass Highway (OR 242) will officially open to all traffic on Monday, June 19, 2017 at 8 a.m. The highway has been closed due to winter snows.

Motorists driving on this curvy road need to be aware of bicyclists and pedestrians on the roadway and take proper precautions. Vehicles longer than 35 feet are prohibited from using the highway.

Salem-Keizer Teacher Arrested on Sexual Abuse Charges

(SALEM, Ore.) - Shane Ross Salem Police Detectives have arrested a Salem-Keizer School District teacher on multiple counts of sexual abuse involving a former student.

40-year old Shane Ross of Turner was arrested Wednesday after a lengthy investigation culminated.

Sex Crime Suspect Arrested Waiting For 16-Year Old Victim In Private Shower Room

Investigators are concerned there may be additional victims.

(KEIZER, Ore.) - Joseph Ronald Ahre Joseph Ahre was arrested by detectives as he waited in a private shower room for what he believed was a 16-year old girl who agreed to meet him there to engage in sexual activity with him in exchange for money and marijuana.

Joseph Ahre thought he was going to personally meet the girl after communicating with her through text messages, but in reality he was communicating with a Keizer detective.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Joshua Vallum property A federal prosecution under a 2009 hate crime law resulted in a lengthy prison sentence last month for a Mississippi gang member who killed a 17-year-old transgender woman—and set an important precedent that could benefit other transgender victims.

A judge sentenced Joshua Vallum to 49 years in federal prison under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009. The prison term is in addition to the life sentence he received in 2015.

USS Liberty Attacked by Israel 50 Years Ago Today

The USS Liberty was a spy ship, keeping tabs on Israel's Arab neighbors and their Soviet advisers.

(SALEM, Ore.) - 1967 USS Liberty attack Fifty years ago today, on June 8, 1967, 34 American servicemen were killed and 174 were wounded when Israel attacked the USS Liberty navy ship in international waters.

It was the highest casualty rate ever inflicted on a U.S. naval vessel. Still, no investigation.
