Rough Going for Afghan Immigrants in France

While many migrants in France come from countries in conflict--they aren’t always aware they can apply for asylum. Others find themselves caught in difficult bureaucratic procedures of making an asylum claim.

(CALAIS/SALEM) - Afghan refugees in Calais, France Mamad Khan has spent another night sleeping outside in freezing temperatures. He is one of hundreds of young men who have come to this port city to escape desperate situations in countries like Afghanistan, Iraq, Iran, Somalia, Eritrea, or Sudan.

Calais has become a transit point where smugglers take them on to another country--usually the United Kingdom.

(Your City USA) - The Truant Officer #19 I don't blame teachers for their classrooms of non-learning. They do the best they can given the circumstances. If students were hungry to learn the teacher's task would be simple.

However with America's entitled attitude teachers must beg students to study, reward them with candy when they haven't caused too much trouble during recess, cajole parents into turning off the tv so that students can spend 15 minutes learning their math facts and practicing their spelling.

(PORT-AU-PRINCE/SALEM) - Haiti`s babies The United Nations reports that about 7,000 women are due to give birth this month in Haiti, as medical teams continue to work around the clock in birthing tents to deliver newborns.

According to UNICEF, there are currently 120,000 pregnant women in Haiti, more than half are in earthquake-affected areas.

Schools in Haiti Still Under Plenty of Rubble

Many survivors still harbor fears of ever being in a classroom again.

(PORT-AU-PRINCE/SALEM) - Haiti schools As schools in other provinces in Haiti reopened today, students of Port-au- Prince’s Daniel Fignolé high school, one of 8,000 schools damaged by the earthquake, still grieved their deceased classmates and teachers as well as struggled with the traumatic memories of being in a classroom again.

Louis Montespoir is the Director of the Daniel Fignole School. "We don't have any teachers that died in the building - but some died elsewhere. But we have 700 students who died."
