CREW Seeks Relief for VA`s Destruction of PTSD Documents

“The VA is not above the law; like all other agencies, it cannot simply destroy documents that have been requested under the FOIA just because those documents may cast the agency in a bad light” -Anne Weismann, CREW’s chief counsel

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - PTSD Today, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a brief seeking discovery after the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) admitted to destroying documents responsive to CREW’s May 2008 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request in CREW v. U.S. Dep’t of Veterans Affairs (D.D.C.).

This lawsuit stems from CREW’s FOIA request for documents related to the VA’s policy of under-diagnosing post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), after an email was revealed in which VA employee Norma Perez discussed this policy.

Latest Study Says TCE Worse Than Thought

Conclusions could lead EPA to propose tougher regulations.

(MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.) - trichloroethylene The Environmental Protection Agency has released a new report concluding that TCE — trichloroethylene, a pollutant found in much of Mountain View's groundwater — is definitely a carcinogen, a finding which could lead the agency to propose tougher cleanup standards.

"Many people across the country are exposed to TCE in their air and their water under current standards that would not be allowable under these (potential) new standards," explained Lenny Siegel, director of the Center for Public Environmental Oversight.

Gresham Police Search for Suspect in Triple Stabbing

Police ask anyone who sees the suspect to call 911.

(GRESHAM, Ore.) - 17-year old Omar Magana of Portland On January 31, 2010 at 12:34 am Gresham Police were dispatched to a fight in the area of NE 177th and NE Couch, after learning that three people were stabbed in a fight. The three reportedly then drove to Mount Hood Medical Center.

Sgt. Richard Wilson with Gresham Police, says detectives were called out to investigate.

A Mad World...Fairview Training Center Up in Flames

The historic building's demise brings to light the evolution and consequences of aged mental health misnomers.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Fairview burning Fairview, the State Institution for the Feeble-Minded, was established by the Oregon Legislative Assembly in 1907. It opened just outside Salem one year later with 39 residents that were transferred from the Oregon State Hospital.

Built on a 670 acre plot, Fairview was specifically charged with "the care and training of such feeble-minded, idiotic, epileptic, and defective persons as have been or may hereafter be committed to its custody."

Sternwheeler Willamette Queen Runs Aground Near Oregon City

No injuries or serious damage was reported.

(OREGON CITY) - The Willamette Queen The Coast Guard is responding to the grounding of the sternwheeler Willamette Queen near Oregon City Sunday. Reports indicate that the 87-foot riverboat was being escorted by two Coast Guard Auxiliary vessels when it ran aground with 80 passengers and eight crew on board at approximately 5:30 p.m.

An MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria, two Coast Guard 25-foot smallboat crews from Station Portland, and a tugboat from Newburg, Ore. were dispatched to the scene, while the two Auxiliary vessels stayed with the Willamette Queen.
