But to those of us who view universal access to affordable health care as our most urgent domestic problem, it will not change our resolve.

According to the World Health Organization, the US ranks a dismal 37th in quality of health care, far below other large nations.

Haiti`s Quake Survivors Seek Care in Dominican Republic

UNICEF hopes to have safe spaces for all under five children in Port au Prince by the end of the week.

(SANTO DOMINGO/SALEM) - Haitian child in Santo Domingo As the logistical challenges that have hampered the relief effort in Haiti begin to get ironed out, some of the injured have been brought to the Dominican Republic.

The Dario Contreras Hospital in Santo Domingo is the city’s primary care center. Staff there have been mobilized to treat Haitians, especially children who have been suffering from injuries sustained in last week’s devastating earthquake.

Senate Committee Passes National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2009

Federal and state governments spend more than $50 billion each year on corrections.

(ARLINGTON) - 2.3 million people in prisons and jails The bi-partisan National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2009 (S. 714) was passed out of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary today by voice vote.

The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) would create a commission to conduct a thorough evaluation of the nation's justice system and offer recommendations for reform at every stage of the criminal justice system.

Severe Storms May Bring Longer Power Outages

More severe thunderstorms and flash flooding will also affect the Southeast today, part of the onslaught of storms moving from the west.

(LOS ANGELES) - Flooded Calif. streets AccuWeather.com reports heavy rain and damaging winds plaguing the Southwest and Southeast are causing power outages that may take longer than usual to restore.

According to Bloomberg, Quanta Services, Inc., one of the nation's largest electrical maintenance providers, said utilities have decreased maintenance spending by as much as 50 percent.
