As the logistical challenges that have hampered the relief effort in Haiti begin to get ironed out, some of the injured have been brought to the Dominican Republic.
The Dario Contreras Hospital in Santo Domingo is the city’s primary care center. Staff there have been mobilized to treat Haitians, especially children who have been suffering from injuries sustained in last week’s devastating earthquake.

The bi-partisan National Criminal Justice Commission Act of 2009 (S. 714) was passed out of the Senate Committee on the Judiciary today by voice vote.
The legislation, sponsored by Sen. Jim Webb (D-Va.) would create a commission to conduct a thorough evaluation of the nation's justice system and offer recommendations for reform at every stage of the criminal justice system.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) announced that the threatened Marbled Murrelet should remain listed under the Endangered Species Act.
“There is no question that the Fish and Wildlife Service made the right call,” said George Fenwick, President of American Bird Conservancy. “We appreciate the agency’s commitment to sound science as reflected by this listing decision. The Marbled Murrelet is a rapidly declining, fascinating species that is in urgent need of additional rather than less protection.
More severe thunderstorms and flash flooding will also affect the Southeast today, part of the onslaught of storms moving from the west.
