DoD Announces Units for Next Iraq Rotation and Extension

The Lunar CRater Observing and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) mission is seeking a definitive answer as to whether or not there is water on the moon.

(CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla.) - NASA Moon Mineralogy Mapper Earth’s closest neighbor is holding a secret. In 1999, hints of that secret were revealed in the form of concentrated hydrogen signatures detected in permanently shadowed craters at the lunar poles by NASA’s Lunar Prospector.

These readings may be an indication of lunar water and could have far-reaching implications as humans expand exploration past low-Earth orbit.

Salem Foreclosure Rates Increase

The mortgage delinquency rate has also increased in Salem.

(SALEM, Ore.) - First American CoreLogic Foreclosure rates in Salem have increased for the month of August over the same period last year, according to First American CoreLogic, the leading collector of national, state and local data on home prices, foreclosure and delinquency activity, real estate sales volume and mortgage loan activity.

According to recent data from First American CoreLogic on foreclosures for the Salem area, the rate of foreclosures among outstanding mortgage loans is 1.76 percent for the month of August, an increase of 1.06 percentage points compared to August of 2008 when the rate was 0.70 percent.*

Experts Say Winds and Dry Conditions Fuel Fire Conditions

Wildland fire agencies are not at full strength in the fall, since some of the seasonal firefighters have returned to their regular jobs or college classes. A larger fire this time of year would stretch resources thin.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Wildland firefighters training last summer in Oregon Fire experts say easterly winds could elevate the risk of wildfire in northwestern Oregon forests this weekend. Foresters caution hunters and other outdoor recreationists heading afield to be mindful of activities that could start a wildfire.

"The forecast is for gusty winds," Oregon Department of Forestry's Neal Laugle said.

Oregon Law Enforcement Wins $31 Million in Federal Stimulus Grants

Oregon law enforcement coalition wins federal stimulus grant money for additional police officers, prosecutors and crime victims’ services.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon Attorney General John Kroger A new coalition of Oregon Attorney General John Kroger, district attorneys, sheriffs, police chiefs and victims’ advocates has won a total of $31 million in federal public safety grants from the federal government.

“Thanks to the work of the coalition, law enforcement in Oregon is in a better position to protect the public,” said Attorney General Kroger.
