Veteran`s Resource Meeting in Salem on Friday

Currently ten percent of Oregon's population are military veterans, yet Oregon is one of only three states without a major military installation.

(SALEM, Ore.) - An Oregon National Guard officer inspects a battered Iraqi MiG-23 jet fighter at the Balad Air Base The Salem Area Veteran Resource monthly meeting will be held Friday, 18 September at 12:15 p.m. in the Winema building on Chemeketa Community College campus 4001 Winema Place, room 102.

Anyone who provides any kind of service to veterans is invited to attend. Special guest speaker will be SFC Phil Maas from the Oregon Army National Guard Yellow Ribbon Program.

Children, Families Forced To Work for Burmese Junta, Ethnic Troops

The United Nations refugee agency, UNHCR, says there are more than 100,000 registered Burmese refugees inside Thailand today, most of them Karen.

(NORTHERN THAILAND RFA) - A group of Karen children, who say they were used as porters by soldiers in Burma, gather in a village for refugees in northern Thailand Children as young as 10 are being forced to work as porters for the Burmese military and ethnic minority Karen troops amid intensifying conflict near the border with Thailand, according to refugees in northern Thailand, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reports.

One village here in a Karen region houses 95 Burmese refugees, including 39 children under age 12. All say they were taken from their villages in Burma and forced to work as military porters.

There's been a 13 percent increase in the number of emergency food boxes distributed for the fiscal year that ended in June. The boxes contain enough to feed a family for several days.

Three Arrested in Beaverton Murder

The victim, 18-year old Alex Hernandez, died late Tuesday, as a result of the injuries sustained during his attack.

Marijuana Arrests Drop for First Time Since 2002

Five Years of Record Arrests Had No Effect on Rate of Marijuana Use.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Pot arrests U.S. marijuana arrests declined in 2008 - the first such drop since 2002 -- according to figures released by the FBI today.

According to the just-released Uniform Crime Reports, U.S. law enforcement made 847,863 arrests on marijuana charges, 89 percent of which were for possession, not sale or manufacture -- more arrests for marijuana possession than for all violent crimes combined.
