Canby Family Roused From Sleep by Raging Fire

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

(CANBY, Ore.) - Fire in Canby, Oregon 7-8-09 A Canby family awoke to the sound of a raging fire and a smoke alarm this morning just after midnight.

"They looked out the window to find there storage shed fully involved in fire no more then a few feet from there home," Deputy Fire Marshal Todd Gary said.

OSP Salem Troopers Back on Area Roads Around-the-Clock Starting in Mid-July

Starting July 14, 2009, the OSP Salem Area Command office will have patrol troopers working around-the-clock.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon State Police trooper on traffic stop After six years with no OSP troopers working around-the-clock patrols in the Marion and Polk county areas, troopers go back onto these highways next Tuesday resuming 24-hour patrol coverage.

Department staffing increases helped OSP troopers increase statewide patrol-related contacts last year.

Deputy Fire Marshals will be in attendance to answer questions and provide helpful information in regards to safety precautions you can take at home.

The public is encouraged to attend the fourth and final open house to tour the new facility, meet firefighters and see a few of the new apparatus that have been purchased through the bond.

$90 Million in Recovery Act Funds to Bolster Water Services in Indian Country and Create Jobs

According to 2007 data from the IHS, approximately 10 percent of tribal homes do not have safe drinking water and/or wastewater disposal facilities.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - Poor Native American The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s (HHS) Indian Health Service (IHS) today announced $90 million in funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The money will be used to improve access to vital drinking water and wastewater services in the American Indian and Alaska Native communities.

Reward Offered for Salem Robbery Suspects (VIDEO)

Plaid Pantry is offering a $1000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect, who reportedly stole $40.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Robbery of Salem, Oregon Plaid Pantry, 7-5-09 Salem Police have released robbery video from security cameras at the Plaid Pantry Store located at 1504 Broadway NE.

The suspect was a male, 25 to 30 years of age, approximately five-foot nine-inches, 170 pounds, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black jeans, black shoes, red gloves, and had a nylon pulled over his head.

Outspoken Uyghur Economist Presumed Detained After Urumqi Clashes

An outspoken economist from China's Uyghur ethnic minority, whose blog was cited for allegedly instigating deadly ethnic clashes in Xinjiang, has gone silent and his whereabouts are unknown after he reported police had summoned him from his Beijing home, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reports.

(HONG KONG RFA) - Ilham Tohti in France, February 2009. RFA photo "Police have been watching my home for two days now," Ilham Tohti, an economics professor at the Central Nationalities University in Beijing, said July 7th in a telephone interview, two days after deadly clashes in the northwestern city of Urumqi killed at least 156 people.

"They are calling me now, and I have to go. I may be out of touch for some time," he told RFA’s Uyghur service.

Death Investigation East of Biggs Junction

The man's next of kin were notified this morning in Mississippi.

(BIGGS JUNCTION, Ore.) - Death investigation Oregon State Police Police say detectives have completed their investigation of decomposed remains of an adult male in a brushy area east of Biggs Junction between Interstate 84 and the railroad tracks.

Brush cutters for the railroad company reported the discovery Thursday at approximately 11:40 a.m. Investigators and OSP Crime Lab personnel responded to the scene.

Salem Man Arrested After Seven Hours of Negotiations

The suspect was bitten on the leg by a police dog and he was treated at Salem Hospital for the injury.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Salem police officers responded to an incident at 12th and McGilchrist SE last night at 5:06 p.m., where one man had reportedly threatened another with a gun. Lt. Dave Okada with Salem Police says the man with the gun is identified as 53-year old Ronald L. Cochran of Salem.

"The victim reported that Mr. Cochran was apparently upset with the relationship between the victim and Cochran's ex-wife," Okada said.

(Salem) - Benny and Sid #52 I just read about an anti-paparazzi device [http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2009/07/celebrity-shielding-flashgun-handbag-defeats-paparazzi/] which flashes an intense LED light into the offending camera's direction when the device's light meter senses a camera flash.

It doesn't appear to be the least bit practical, but it demonstrates the level of frustration endured by celebrities. I don't think anyone really cares if Celebrity A has cellulite and shouldn't be at the beach wearing a blue Speedo, yet it's a common photo-topic in the scandal rags even though it's about as appetizing as a picture of a sore toe.
