U.S. Supreme Court Affirms California`s Medical Marijuana Law

High court refuses to hear state lawsuit brought by San Diego County.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - California flag with marijuana leaf Medical marijuana advocates celebrated today as the U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear a landmark case brought by San Diego County.

Advocates assert that the High Court's decision removes one of the final obstacles to full implementation of California's medical marijuana laws. The lawsuit challenged the state-mandate to implement an ID card program for patients based on the argument that state law is preempted by federal law, but both courts rejected that argument.

Rural Communities Get Real Boost From Feds

Agriculture Secretary Vilsack Announced $60 Million for Rural Community Facilities Projects. Local Communities will Purchase More than 120 Fire, Police, and Rescue Vehicles.

(LUDOWICI, Ga.) - Federal funding Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack today announced the selection of more than $60 million in essential community facilities and emergency responder projects that are being funded immediately with federal funds provided through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The 280 projects will help communities in 39 states.

Salem Police Safely Locate Possible Endangered Infant and Mother (UPDATE)

The mother who took her four-month old infant last night is now in custody and her child is safe.

(SALEM, Ore.) - 27-year old Sarah Mullins Police say 27-year old Sarah Mullins appeared at the Marion County Juvenile Court today at about 10:30 a.m. with her infant, Ashton Bradley Giron-Taylor and was immediately taken into custody.

She was charged with Custodial Interference in the Second Degree and transported to the Marion County Jail.

EPA Superfunds: Veterans at Risk

Veterans and their dependents are unaware of the risk of exposure to contaminants and health effects for bases on the EPA National Priority List (Superfund).

(SOMERDALE, N.J.) - El Toro flightline The Pentagon owns 133 Superfund sites, the most of any organization.

Veterans and dependents were exposed to contaminants at these sites, including carcinogens like TCE, PCE, benzene and radiation.

20 Years of Success May Not Save Oregon`s Drug Courts

Addiction treatment budget cuts are among those proposed as the state deals with what's estimated to be a $4-billion budget shortfall over the next couple of years.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - The nation's drug courts celebrate their 20th anniversary this month as the alternative to incarceration that is also designed to save taxpayers money.

The second-oldest drug court in the country is Oregon's Multnomah County program, which, like the dozens of other drug courts around the state, is in jeopardy because of the state's economic crisis.

US: Ask Israel to Cooperate with Goldstone Inquiry

Obama Should Endorse Comprehensive UN Investigation of the Gaza Conflict

(WASHINGTON D.,C.) - Image of Gaza in the wake of the IDF offensive President Barack Obama should endorse a comprehensive UN investigation, headed by Justice Richard Goldstone, into violations of international law during the recent Gaza conflict, and should urge Israel, when he meets today with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, to cooperate with the investigation, Human Rights Watch said.

The Obama administration has so far not made any public comment on the Goldstone investigation, but US officials continue to insist privately that it will be biased against Israel.

(CALGARY, Alberta) - Stockholm Religion In 2002 16-year old Bethany Hughes of Calgary was diagnosed with leukemia, which doctors said could only be treated with blood transfusions and chemotherapy.

The Hughes’ were devout Jehovah’s Witnesses who did not believe in blood transfusions and, because of her own, parentally inculcated, devout beliefs, Bethany did everything she could, even in her weakened state, to resist treatment, including pulling tubes out of her arms.

Top-Dollar Drive Definitely Damages Human Necessities.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - Dollar Sign One thing we know for sure re the capitalistic “market-miracle system” is that profit-pursuit drives policy and performance, with little regard for anything else --including human necessities. With costs considered as essential unavoidable negative consequence for any-and-all corporate decisions, do you really believe private-profit performance, pitted against any possible gain for patients --poor or otherwise-- will have any weight against dollar-balances?

With healthcare --or lack of it-- definitely shaping and very often determining essential ability to workand- earn, that heavy burden all too often forces reliance on the last resort --the “emergency room” --in too many hospitals.
