Common Sense of Oregon Wins Prestigious `White Bully Award`

A press release about prisoner soda pop is making headlines, but it's nothing more than a thinly veiled attack on the poor.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Toilet Too many people with limited life experience make public charges. The Group "Common Sense For Oregon", which frankly I had never heard of, has managed to get news attention over its non-revelation that Oregon is spending, according to them, $773,000 for free soda pop for prisoners.

The first point to make in regard to this, is that we have 1 out of 31 Americans incarcerated today and it is a national shame. So why are they there? One reason is the simple fact that new laws are continually enacted and implemented, further outlawing more and more activity.

Who Will Stop the AIPAC Before it is Too Late?

Opinion and historical review from one of Code Pink's top activists about Israel, the treatment Americans received at AIPAC, and reactions that western media ignored.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - Code Pink`s Medea Benjamin While I was being tackled by security guards at Washington's Convention Center during the AIPAC conference for unfurling a banner that asked "What about Gaza?," my heart was aching.

I wasn't bothered so much by the burly guards who were yanking my arms behind by back and dragging me-along with 5 other CODEPINK members-out of the hall. They were doing their job.

The Two-State Delusion

Bush's endorsement of Israel's "right to defend itself" is echoed even if more quietly by Obama, and the statements speak volumes about American complacency over even extremely and highly documented events like the recent Israeli attacks on Gaza.

(JACKSON, Miss.) - Nightmare at Gaza The world is once again being treated to yet another round in the Israeli-Palestinian "peace process" charade.

The "usual suspects" are posturing, pronouncements are being made, speeches are being given, and hints and rumors about a supposed "toughening" in the US Government's approach to Israel are filtering out from the press.

Diversity is a Nine Letter Word

The challenges of parenting are never ending and never the same.

(AGOURA, Calif.) - Diversity Diversity is a nine-letter word; so is parenting. ShortRib (my wife) and I met a wonderful couple on our recent honeymoon that, at first, we thought and they thought represented the most diversity in a couple any of us knew.

In fact, they were written up as just such a phenomenon in a local paper in their hometown. David is a 55-year-old, liberal, white Jewish lawyer, while Farah is a 40-year-old, conservative, black Christian, non-profit worker.

Autism and The Associated Press

The social factors of satisfactory treatment are even more important than the financial. Autism patients are frequently social pariahs whether they want to be or not.

(MOLALLA, Ore.) - Salem-News.com The Oregonian, May 10, 2009, had another AP article this one by Lindsey Tanner about a “cure” for Autism.

For those who don’t know, Autism is a very mean disease and the layman or new parent would consider the child crazy because they certainly do compulsively weird things and apparently cannot communicate by speaking or paying ANY attention to parents or even highly skilled Autism specialists which are usually specially trained psychologists.

Soldiers Killing Soldiers in Iraq: an Established Problem

Gunfights between U.S. soldiers have been taking place in Iraq for years.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com The news about five American soldiers killed and three injured by one of their own at Camp Victory in Baghdad, Iraq was like a kick in the gut. The news follows last week's soldier suicide in the Oregon Guard parking lot.

Sadly, it takes numbers to get people's attention. We constantly publish stories about casualties whose deaths were "not combat related" and the details are always left out. I wonder how many of those are Americans killed by other Americans? I also wonder how many happen because of the repeated combat tours that no person should be asked to endure.

Gresham Man Dies in Oregon Highway Work Zone Crash (PHOTOS)

Police say the ODOT work zone was well-marked for approximately two miles prior to the location where traffic was to merge to the right lane.
