Police Investigate Serious Crashes in Oregon Highway Work Zones (PHOTOS)

Police say the truck crashes are a reminder of the need to be attentive as highway maintenance and construction on the increase

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Truck crash in Oregon, 5-11-09 In one of two traffic crashes Monday involving vehicles colliding with ODOT maintenance trucks on Interstate 84, Oregon State Police cited a commercial truck driver after he was involved in a non-injury crash east of The Dalles.

The other incident west of Cascade Locks resulted in the death of a pickup driver and more details will be released this evening related to that fatal traffic crash.

Man Fatally Struck by Commercial Truck on Freeway Near Salem

The fatal commercial vehicle versus pedestrian crash happened on Interstate 5 south of Salem‏.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Pedestrian killed Oregon State Police troopers are investigating the death of a Salem man after he ran in front of a commercial truck and was struck on Interstate 5 northbound south of Salem.

Lt. Gregg Hastings with OSP says around 10:00 A.M. this morning, a 1997 Volvo truck pulling a semi-trailer loaded with furniture, was in the right northbound lane of Interstate 5 near milepost 247, when a man standing on the shoulder reportedly ran into the path of the commercial truck and was struck.

Five Americans Killed in Baghdad by Fellow U.S. Army Soldier

Gates expresses horror, regret over base slayings at Camp Victory.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said the Defense Department will devote its “highest-priority attention” to the slaying today of five U.S. servicemembers in Baghdad.

“I would like to express my horror and deep regret over today's shooting incident at Camp Liberty in Iraq,” Gates said at a Pentagon news briefing. “I offer my sympathy and condolences to the families of those who were killed.”

Winds, Heat Threaten to Spread California Fire

Winds that have diminished are expected to pick up later today, causing more fire danger.

(SANTA BARBARA) - Weather map California Fire AccuWeather.com reports that although firefighters have been able to reach 70% containment of the fire, aided by a combination of lighter winds and a cooler, moist onshore flow from the Pacific over the weekend, winds are expected to pick up again tonight into Tuesday.

These winds are not expected to be as strong as those of late last week. Winds could become rather strong again late in the week. Temperatures are expected to surge in the Wednesday to Friday period, when humidity levels will drop significantly.

Iran Could Elect First Female President

Iran's constitutional watchdog, the Guardian Council, declared in April that there is no restriction on women standing in this year's presidential elections.

(TEHRAN, Iran) - Rafat Bayat More than 40 women have registered as prospective candidates for Iran's tenth Presidential election, a top election official says.

"Of the 475 who signed up as candidates, 433 are men and 42 are women," Kamran Daneshjoo, the head of Iran's election committee told reporters on Sunday.

Salem Man`s Body Recovered Days After Plunging From Embankment

Investigators believe the man may have been at the bottom of an embankment for several days before being discovered.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Death investigation Marion County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a single vehicle crash at Brooklake Road and Wheatland Road last night at 7:00 p.m.

Lt. Sheila Lorance with the Sheriff's Office, says arriving deputies located a 1995 Nissan Sentra that had traveled approximately 130 feet down an embankment.
