Teen Who Died During Rescue Awarded Gold Lifesaving Medal Posthumously

The Gold Lifesaving Medal was established by Congress in 1874 and is one of the oldest military medals.

(SEATTLE ) - Gold Lifesaving Medal Awarded to the family of Ross Barfuss A Gold Lifesaving Medal was posthumously awarded to a local hero named Ross Barfuss at Aloha High School in Aloha Oregon, Thursday.

Ross died at the age of 16 while attempting to rescue a 12-year old boy who was caught in heavy surf near Cutler City, Oregon on March 8th 2008.

The victim is 29-year old Darrell K. Schoonover lf Vernonia.

(BIRKENFELD, Ore.) - Homicide scene in Columbia County, Oregon 3-19-09 The Columbia County Sheriff's Office was dispatched to a reported shooting in the Birkenfeld area this morning at 1:06 a.m.

This is a rural location in northwest Columbia County near the Clatsop County line. Responding deputies and officers found one person dead at the scene.

ODVA Will Commemorate Anniversary of Iraq War

(SALEM, Ore.) - Afghan-Iraq Freedom Memorial The Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs will hold a special wreath laying ceremony Thursday at 1:00 p.m., to commemorate the 6th anniversary of the Iraq War and to honor those who have served.

The public ceremony will take place at the Afghan-Iraqi Freedom Memorial on the department grounds located at 700 Summer Street N.E. in Salem.
