Every day, I am assaulted by something in the topsy-turvey world of US politics that amazes me and makes me say to myself, 'Well I guess I have seen it all now', only for it to be outdone and replaced the very next day by something even more outrageous.
Politics can do that to people. Power and the opportunity to play on the 'big field' is like a drug that makes people do crazy things, things that defy reason, logic, and sometimes decency.

Department of Defense Reports Casualties in Afghanistan

Two soldiers killed in Afghanistan served in the Army's 101st Airborne Division.
(WASHINGTON D.C.) -
The Department of Defense announced today the death of two soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
They died February 10th in Salerno, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle.

Study Shows Tax Puts Majority of Oregon Hospitals in the Black

The plan, "Aim High, Building a Healthy Oregon" was presented to the Governor in November 2008, and is now under consideration in the Oregon Legislature.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
A study commissioned by the Oregon Health Fund Board on the impact of a hospital tax on Oregon's hospitals shows that at least 40 of the 57 hospitals in the state would net a positive income from the newly covered patients and increased reimbursement rates, with the remaining hospitals recouping most of the tax paid.
Dr. John McConnell, health care economist and author of the study, has used data provided by the hospitals to the state to create a model testing a 4% tax rate with two different rates for Medicaid patient reimbursement.

Officials Find IED at Oregon School

The Metro Explosive Disposal Unit responded to the school, took control of the device, and transported it to a location for disposal.
(CLACKAMAS, Ore.) -
Police say that around 8:45 a.m. today, a La Salle Catholic College Preparatory employee found what appeared to be an unexploded device near the landscape shed on the school campus.
Detective Jeffrey Green with the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office says deputies responded and identified the device as an improvised explosive device or "IED" which is what soldiers and Marines are often killed with in Iraq and Afghanistan.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon says Israel only allows a meager amount of humanitarian aid to enter the impoverished Gaza Strip. The United Nations strives to provide relief to one million people daily inside a coastal sliver that is home to 1.5 million people, Ban said during a news conference on Tuesday.
