House, Not Senate, Economic Package Would Ease Health Care Squeeze

Oregon Center for Public Policy says it affects abbout 51,000 unemployed, low-income Oregonians.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - White House The economic recovery package approved by the U.S. House of Representatives -- but not the version still under consideration in the Senate -- would extend Medicaid health coverage to the families of some 51,000 unemployed, low-income Oregonians, according to a new study out today.

Less than half, or 44 percent, of low-income Oregonians who've lost their jobs have health insurance through a former employer, a public program or private insurer, according to the report by Families USA, a national consumer advocacy group.

Millions Raised by Gaza Appeal

BBC director general Mark Thompson said the decision not to broadcast the appeal was "absolutely" in line with the corporation's broader approach to impartiality and appeals.

(GAZA) - Attack on Gaza An emergency relief appeal for the crisis in Gaza has raised £3 million despite anger over broadcasters' refusal to show it.

The refusal led to protests outside the BBC's Broadcasting House, where demonstrators burned their television licences and occupied the building's reception until they were removed by police.

17-Year-Old in Columbia County‏ Arrested for Manslaugher

An six month investigation led to the charges against the juvenile male suspect who they say was responsible for a crash that killed a 17-year old girl.

(SCAPOOSE, Ore.) - Handcuffs Police say that nearly seven months after the car he had been driving crashed and killed a teenaged passenger, a 17-year-old Saint Helens youth turned himself in to deputies who were looking for him, bearing a warrant for the juvenile suspect's arrest.

The boy was charged with one count of first-degree Manslaughter, one count of Failure to Perform the Duties of a Driver, one count of Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, and one count of Reckless Driving.

Vancouver Police Investigate Double Homicide

The Vancouver Police Major Crimes Unit is investigating this incident; at this point there is no suspect information and no arrests have been made.

(VANCOUVER, Wash.) - Homicide investigation Vancouver Police officers responded to a radio call of "Shots Heard" last night around 7:15 PM.

Officer Ilia Botvinnik with Vancouver Police, says that upon arrival at the location in the 7000 block of Indiana Street, officers found two adults lying on driveway of a residence.

"Both individuals were deceased, suffering from gunshot wounds," Botvinnik said.

Man Attempts to Entice Young Girl Into his Car

The man reportedly told her to “get in the car,” and said they “would have some fun.” The girl described the man as a Hispanic male adult in his 20’s.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Investigators in Washington County say a man followed a 12-year old girl Wednesday night as she was walking to a friend’s house.

Sgt. Dave Thompson with the Washington County Sheriff's Office says the man asked the girl several times to get into his car.

"The girl did not reply to the man, and ran to her friend’s house. Deputies are looking for leads involving the suspect," Thompson said.

Greenpeace & ICF: Stimulus Will Fight Global Warming

Groups say Recovery Package Would Cut At Least 61 Million Tons of CO2 Every Year.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Man walking in desert A new Greenpeace-commissioned carbon footprint analysis of the economic recovery package projects that the bill’s energy efficiency and conservation provisions alone could cut carbon dioxide emissions by over 61 million metric tons annually, equivalent to the greenhouse gases from electricity use in 7.9 million American homes or taking over 13 million cars off the road.

In Oregon this would mean investments in various State programs, such as almost $90 million for mass transit investments, almost 7 million for the State Energy Program and 23 million for the Weatherization Assistance Program.

(TEHRAN) - Tayyip Erdogan Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called for recognition of Hamas which won a landslide victory in Palestinian elections.

In an interview with The Washington Post published Saturday, Recep Tayyip Erdogan said isolating Hamas is the reason for the ongoing tensions in the region.

He criticized world leaders for failing to respect the political will of the Palestinian people who voted for the Palestinian resistance movement.

Fumes Send 43 People to Local Hospitals (PHOTO SERIES)

It is believed that the illnesses happened because a volunteer parent was preparing for an art project and used Krylon Crystal Clear acrylic spray before school started.

(LAKE OSWEGO) - Fumes at a Lake Oswego school 2-5-09 Westridge Elementary School Principal Dr. Scott Lane contacted the fire department about an odor in the school this morning at 10:23 a.m.

"They could not find a source at that time one student was complaining of nausea and dizziness," Lake Oswego Fire Department Spokesman Gert Zoutendijk said.

He says that when Truck 211 arrived, it was the first unit on scene, and they quickly noticed the situation was more than just one student sick.
