Group Finds Significant Gap in the Army`s 2008 Quantity and Quality Goals
Salem-News.com
On the Heels of the U.S. Army's announced goal of 65,000 additional recruits, National Priorities Project (NPP) finds significant gap in Army's 2008 quantity and quality goals
(NORTHAMPTON, Mass.) -
A new NPP analysis highlights a significant gap in the Army's 2008 quantity and quality goals. Using census material, combined with data on 2008 Army enlistment obtained through a Freedom of Information Act, NPP research also uncovers a continued trend of disproportionate recruits from southern states.
This work is a result of an expanded NPP initiative, which now includes a database of 2004-2008 military recruitment numbers broken down by zip code, county and state. A snapshot analysis and overview of current military recruitment data, which includes a ranking of counties by recruits per thousand youth, charts and tables on a particular county, zip code or state is available at nationalpriorities.org.

Workplace Attitudes - A Lesson from a Chinese Tattoo Artist
Doug Dickerson Salem-News.com
The Management Moments series by Doug Dickerson is a weekly column designed to bring inspiration to those in the workplace and beyond.
(CHARLESTON, S.C.) -
Dr. Norman Vincent Peale relates this story from his book, Power of the Plus Factor: ”Once walking through the twisted little streets of Kowloon in Hong Kong, I came upon a tattoo studio. In the window were displayed samples of the tattoos available."
"On the chest or arms you could have tattooed an anchor or flag or mermaid or whatever. But what struck me with force were three words that could be tattooed on one’s flesh, 'Born to Lose'."
I asked the Chinese tattoo artist, “Does anyone really have that terrible phrase tattooed on his body?”
He replied, “Yes, sometimes.”

Joaquin Phoenix Takes a Dive; Career and All
Tim King Salem-News.com Entertainment Report
Joaquin Walks the Line and
Takes a Fall.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
Last week, The Rolling Stone reported that Joaquin Phoenix was making his move from actor to rapper official. He announced that he would mark the event with a performance at a Las Vegas club.
The video below attests to what this looks like, and sounds like, and it isn't good. The Rolling Stone suggested that the performance was nothing short of a train wreck, with Phoenix struggling to even put sentences together during this official debut.
Making matters all the worse, Phoenix fell off the stage at the conclusion of his one-song set.

Christian Metaphors
Kenneth G. Ramey Salem-News.com
If we believe what is written in the Bible, we ought also to believe the sacrifice of the “essential man,” Jesus, was merely the first of three steps by which the Christian concept became the Catholic Church.
(PASO ROBLES, Calif.) -
The creation of the Christian Church by the Coterie took planning and ingenuity beyond the range of usual competency that involved not only Jesus, but his disciples, and a cast of characters who played important roles in the success of the scheme.
After the crucifixion of Jesus, the next step was to use his disciples, especially Peter, as interim players in the creation of a viable Church. Peter was the only disciple to say of Jesus - the Son of Man - “you are the Christ,” [Mark: 8; 29] and because of it, his apparent faith became the symbolic rock on which the Coterie founded the Church and assumed Peter’s authority as the Passive Voice of the See of St. Peter, the actual authority of Roman Catholicism; popes are chosen to be Active Voices.

President Barack Obama acted swiftly and expeditiously by calling for a halt to the unfair military commission proceedings at Guantanamo, Human Rights Watch said today.

Op Ed: Freedom Attacked: Hampered, Injured Via Vocal Malignity
By Henry Clay Ruark for Salem-News
Both press and citizen dialog needs responsibilities.
(EUGENE, Ore.) -
“Free speech” is the pure-gold coin of democracy. Like any other valuable coin, this one has two sides: The second-one is responsibility coupled with accountability --deeply engraved wherever the freedom-side is found.
President Obama’s inauguration spells out --in dollar and volunteer depth-- what honest democratic dialog, via the Internet and every other possible channel, can achieve.
Many reporters/recorders agree that his potent mandate --so widely recognized it defies denigration-- demonstrates wit, wisdom and will of the American people as still operational.

Horrifying Double Murder of Lawyer and Journalist in Central Moscow Underlines Climate of Impunity
Salem-News.com
Horrifying double murder of lawyer and journalist in central Moscow underlines climate of impunity.
(MOSCOW) -
Reporters Without Borders today reacted with horror to the double murder in central Moscow of lawyer Stanislav Markelov, specialising in murders committed in Chechnya, and journalist on the bi-weekly Novaya Gazeta who was with him, Anastasia Baburova, shot dead as they left a press conference given by the lawyer.
Markelov had at the January 19th press conference condemned the early release of Yuri Bodanov, a Russian former colonel who was sentenced in 2003 to ten years in prison for the murder of an 18-year-old Chechen, Elza Kungayeva, whose family Markelov was representing.

`Ann Coulter Smells Like Poop and Sadness`
Perspective by Tim King Salem-News.com
The DJ's on a Portland, Oregon FM station bantered this term the other night. I believe those words, the title of this story, summarize feelings about Coulter for an awfully large number of people.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
Few people inspire a line like that. Disc jocks on Portland, Oregon's KUFO coined the phrase about Coulter. I find it totally ironic that a station named for alien space ships would be so grounded and down to earth in thier thinking.
The thing about Coulter is that she crosses lines that others wouldn't dream of violating. She is a violator of all things in the world that are decent and true.
Her enemies are the poor in general, single moms in particular, gay people, anyone with an agenda resembling kindness, and the families of policemen and firefighters who died on September 11th 2001. That's a heck of a list. For people like Coulter who live 100% off shock value by feeding the needs of the mean and cruel, conscience isn't part of the deal.
