Clark County Winter Weather Update: Hazardous Road Conditions

Vancouver crews unrelenting in battle with constant snow; Residents urged to stay off snow-packed, icy streets‏.

(VANCOUVER, Wash.) - Snow As steady snowfall continues to cloak the City of Vancouver, unrelenting Public Works crews maintain their push to keep open critical streets connecting fire, police and hospitals.

All streets within the city were reported open as of 5:00 PM, but snow-packed and extremely slick in many areas as temperatures dropped. Side streets were socked with snow, 3 to 4 inches deep.

Vancouver Public Works urges residents to stay off the roads and avoid unnecessary travel if at all possible. For those who must drive, chains or traction tires are recommended. Please remain a safe distance from snow plows and other equipment, giving them ample room to safely do their job.

Taliban Proposes Formula to End Crisis in Afghanistan

The fugitive Taliban chief, whose name is among the wanted men by the United States, in the formula warned to intensify attacks on foreign troops if the White House sends additional troops to Afghanistan.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Afghan military recruits massed for a Vice Presidential visit to Kabul In case you don't know, the Taliban in Afghanistan is frequently in contact with the world's richest nations. This group many Americans view as a rag tag band of militants, are taken seriously in international circles.

They send out news releases, and are viewed as a serious adversary in nations like Great Britain where Taliban leaders express their views and demands in news reports.

The latest news is that the Taliban chief has proposed a formula to end crisis in Afghanistan. China's Xinhua news agency reports that the Taliban's elusive leader, Mullah Mohammad Omar, forwarded a formula to end conflicts and bring about peace in his war-torn country.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Here is the latest roundup of western Oregon and SW Washington closures, openings and delays. This list was created Saturday morning and is our most current at this time.

Among other concerns, residents are advised to allow extra time for travel and make sure somebody knows their route and expected time of arrival. Roads are slick and temperatures are low; it is not a good time to take short cuts.

Oregon Police Bid Farewell to a Fallen Brother (VIDEO)

The memorial service for Capt. Tennant was extensive and somber. People came out in icy cold weather to pay their respects for this officer who fell in the line of duty.

(WOODBURN, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Captain Tom Tennant and Oregon State Police Senior Trooper Bill Hakim died Friday, December 12th, when an explosive device detonated at a Woodburn area bank.

Today, Captain Tom Tennant was laid to rest after a special memorial ceremony attended by hundreds. The two officers, along with Woodburn Police Chief Scott Russell and a bank employee, were involved in the explosion. Chief Russell suffered serious injuries and the bank employee suffered minor injuries.

True Democratic process demands time & effort.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - Salem-News.com For decades, in our nation, many informed sources have been reporting rapid growth of widespread fury by many, many citizens against policies forced upon them by “the powers-that-be” --however defined now. Patience is not a virtue of democracies.

Formation of new democratic-pattern governance worldwide, ever since our own, has demonstrated that without doubt, those pragmatic, always-massive movements are birthed in revolution, and that fury is retained. That invariably means rapid-upset approach to unbearable oppressions, of any kind: cultural, social or economic --even though, in any established democratic pattern, it may take considerable time.

As long as the new 406 MHz beacon has been registered (which is required by law), search and rescue authorities can quickly confirm that the distress is real, who they are looking for, and a description of the vessel or aircraft.

(SEATTLE) - Salem-News.com For the past year the television broadcasters have blanketed the airwaves advising the public that starting in February 2009 over-the-air television broadcasts will be going digital in the United States.

This means that if you want to continue to receive free television reception, you must have a newer TV that has a digital tuner or you need to get a digital-to-analog converter box. Not as well known but of substantial importance is that a critical piece of life-saving equipment will also be affected with a change from analog to digital transmissions - an Emergency Positioning Indicating Radio Beacon or "EPIRB."

City and State Crews Gear Up for Next Storm System‏

Portland and the state of Oregon are gearing up for increasing cold and ice.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Portland, Oregon The National Weather Service is predicting another severe winter weather event for the Portland metropolitan region this weekend. City and State crews are prepared to respond.

Road conditions are generally good throughout the city of Portland – clear pavement, some patches of snow, some patches of ice – but most streets are clear and drivable. Crews are sanding, plowing, and applying de-icer chemical on problem spots as needed. Efforts today are focused in the hills and in known hazard areas all around the city. Crews are patrolling the city and monitoring locations for temperature changes, precipitation, and road conditions.
