Oregon Roads are Icy!
Tim King Salem-News.com
Frosty conditions mean drivers need to slow down and be extremely careful.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
It is that time of year again when our news mailbox begins filling up with news releases from police and fire agencies detailing the most recent icy road related crashes in Oregon. It is staggering to consider how frequently these often tragic accidents, could have been avoided.
Each year in Oregon, far too many people are severely injured and killed from crashes that result from drivers losing control on the ice. We are into that time of year when each morning, sections of streets and highways may be very slick. Depending on where you are, the conditions can last all day. Sometimes the ice melts off and refreezes again when the sun goes down.
Even the most experienced drivers have to direct maximum attention to driving on snow and ice. The most challenging driving conditions result from black ice; invisible on the roadways. Black ice often remains on shaded stretches of roadway when the road seems otherwise safe.

Bush`s Final Hour Means Destruction of Rights and Programs
Perspective by Tim King Salem-News.com
You people elected this guy?
(SALEM, Ore.) -
I have said from the beginning that W. is probably the anti-Christ and I believe it more than ever. To think that this poor excuse of a man was able to slime his way into office at all is disturbing enough, and now we learn of his final agenda to take his final shots at women, poor and elderly people, as well as the very land that comprises our nation. I can't say it is surprising.
George W. is going out with a real bang.
Of course in the spirit of "Christianity", Bush has crafted a new rule permitting workers to refuse to perform abortions, dispense birth control pills, or even provide emergency contraception in rape cases.
Bush is reducing outpatient services for poor people covered under Medicaid. This is likely to mean cuts in such basics as dental and vision care, diagnostic screenings for children, and lab and ambulance services.

Kids Will `Shop With a Cop` in Mid-Valley Cities
Salem-News.com
The "Shop with a Cop" events are a great opportunity for police officers to interact with children that may only have had a negative experience with law enforcement.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
The need is greater this year as state troopers, county deputies, and city police officers reach out to help over 600 kids shop for special gifts this holiday season at three locations in Linn, Benton and Marion counties. It is part of their area annual "Shop with a Cop" event.
For the 14th year, Corvallis and Albany-area police officers will help local disadvantaged and foster children shop for Christmas gifts as part of the local "Shop with a Cop" program. Last year, 181 children left with smiles on their faces after purchasing videos, clothing, toys, and other special gifts while shopping with state, county, and city police officers.
"We all are experiencing in some way the impact of the economy and most of these children would receive very little even in the best of times," said long-time "Shop with a Cop" organizer, Ms. Reita Wyatt.

Group Pressures Russia to End Brown Bear Hibernation Slaughter
Tim King Salem-News.com
Habitat loss and unregulated hunting are driving brown bears into extinction in Russia and parts of Eastern and Western Europe.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
The International Fund for Animal Welfare says the slaughter of brown bears each winter in Russia takes a huge toll on bear populations while leaving countless cubs orphaned and left to die.
In Russia during the winter, hunters reportedly enter bear dens, wake the bears from hibernation and then shoot the mother. Den hunting leaves 4,000 bear cubs orphaned every year. Many of these orphaned cubs are left to starve to death, while others are taken to entertain tourists or to be eaten in restaurants.
IFAW is asking those who care about this problem to take the time to sign a petition directed to President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, and they believe an international voice is necessary.
