Salem Police Arrest Suspect In Robbery and Shooting of Cab Driver

The location of the traffic stop was at Pine St NE and Laurel St NE, just blocks from the location of the May 24th incident.

(SALEM, Ore.) - 19-year old Bernardino Garcia Salem Police have arrested a suspect in the robbery and shooting of a cab driver on the morning of May 24th. Police spokesman Lt. Dave Okada says 19-year old Bernardino Garcia, was arrested during a traffic stop at approximately 9:00 pm last night.

Okada says that on May 24th at approximately 4:22 AM, Salem Police were called to a report of a person with a gunshot wound in the 2200 block of Liberty St NE.

Phone Lines in Washington Cities are Down

Authorities in Washington say people need to flag down police or fire if they experience an emergency until the problems are resolved; 911 is part of the failure.

(VANCOUVER, Wash.) - Clark County Fire & Rescue in Washington state says that at the present time, telephone lines in the Battleground and Yacolt area with the prefixes 342, 666, and 687 are down.

Henry Von Dem Fange, Public Information with Clark County Fire & rescue, says people can not call 911 at this time. We have not been able to learn exactly what the problems are that are resulting in the outage, we will advise when we learn more.

Oregon Corporation and Its President Sentenced for Hazardous Waste Violations

Former Engineer Indicted for Obstruction of Justice.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Spencer Environmental Incorporated (SEI) and its president, Donald M. Spencer, were sentenced today by U.S. District Judge Haggerty for the District of Oregon, the Justice Department announced. In a related matter, SEI's former engineer, Durbin Hartel, was indicted yesterday by a federal grand jury for obstruction of justice and lying to investigators.

SEI and Spencer admitted to three felony violations of hazardous waste laws of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) on Oct. 12th 2007. The court sentenced SEI today to pay $150,000. Of this amount, $75,000 will fund various environmental projects in Oregon administered by the congressionally established National Fish and Wildlife Fund (NFWF) through the Oregon Governor's Fund for the Environment.

Low-Income Advocates Support Whitehouse on Climate Change

The OCPP says that without adequate protections such as those proposed by the Whitehouse amendment, carbon emissions controls could increase the hardship faced by low-income families,

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - Salem-News.com Legislation proposed by Rhode Island U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse capping carbon emissions can protect low-income Oregonians while fighting global warming, advocates told Oregon's U.S. Senators Gordon Smith and Ron Wyden today in a letter presented prior to a vote on the issue.

The letter from the Oregon Center for Public Policy urged the Oregon senators to support the Whitehouse amendment to the Climate Security Act of 2008. Also known as Lieberman-Warner, the Climate Security Act would cap carbon emissions.

Amber Alert Canceled for Florida Boy

The Florida State Police canceled the Amber Alert Friday night after the boy was found safe in Tampa. There is no further information on the suspects at this time.
