Armed Forces Day Celebration Day Set to Kick Off in Salem

The formal portion of the celebration will begin at 11:55 AM.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Oregon State Capitol in Salem The State of Oregon will recognize the historical and present-day contributions of the U.S. Military during an Armed Forces Day celebration May 15th on the Capital Mall.

Oregon's Armed Forces Day gives citizens an opportunity to see the capabilities of the Oregon National Guard and the Office of Emergency Management, and introduces them to the agencies which support the state and work with federal partners.

New Report Calculates Pay Advantage of Union Jobs in Oregon

Over the past three decades, the wages of Oregonians have stagnated as union membership has steadily declined, the OCPP says.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - Local 600 Cinematographers Guild For Oregon workers at all rungs of the income ladder, especially those at the bottom, joining a union provides a leg up. That is the conclusion of a study by the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR) released today by the Oregon Center for Public Policy.

The study found that unionization increases the pay of a typical low-wage worker in Oregon by about 21 percent.

Police Release Photo From Fatal Crash Near Monmouth

The crash claimed the life of a Dallas man, the semi-truck driver received minor injuries.

(MONMOUTH, Ore.) - a traffic crash that involved a pickup and a commercial truck Wednesday morning on Highway 99W about four miles south of Monmouth. Police say the victim who died is 25-year old Nicholas Larry-Lee Faas of Dallas.

According to Oregon State Police Sergeant Kevin Delgrande, shortly after 11:00 AM yesterday morning, a 1994 Toyota pickup driven by Mr. Faas was northbound on Highway 99W near milepost 66 passing another vehicle in a no-passing zone.

Activists say the Endangered Species Act has failed in more than 99 percent of all listings to do that which is was created to do.

(LAKEWOOD, Co.) - Polar bear The government's decision to list the polar bear as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act will give environmental trial lawyers "a powerful new legal sledgehammer" against virtually every business and agricultural operation in the Western U.S.

It will deliver virtually no benefit to the polar bear species, according to Jim Sims, President and CEO of the Western Business Roundtable.

Police pursuit Leads to Arrest of Two Suspects

A police chase ended in a crash and the recovery of a stolen truck and stolen goods, one suspect got away from the deputies and is at large.

(SALEM,Ore.) - Crash scene in Salem, Oregon following pursuit A call to Salem's dispatch center just before 1:30 PM advising of an erratic driver in the area of Highway 214 and Brownell Road SE, sent deputies in that direction in search of a 1990's White Ford F-150 Pick-up that had been driving westbound on Hwy 214.

Commander Jason Myers with the Marion County Sheriff's Office says the complainant who made the initial call to dispatch, stayed on the phone with dispatch and provided updates as the vehicle proceeded to drive toward Salem.

Police: Illegal Pass Kills Motorist on 99W Near Monmouth

Oregon's Highway Department has a detour established around the fatal crash scene, the highway near Monmouth is closed.

(MONMOUTH, Ore.) - Oregon State Police report a fatal traffic crash on Highway 99W about four miles south of Monmouth. They say the highway there is closed. State troopers on the scene say the collision involved a passenger vehicle and a commercial truck.

"Preliminary information from the scene indicates a northbound small pickup driven by the victim attempted to pass a vehicle in a no passing zone and collided with a southbound commercial truck."

Too many people die each year on Oregon's roads, here is a look at what those tragic scenes look like: the point is to remind everyone to drive safely.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com You have no idea what races through my mind each time I hear a siren wailing in the background, rushing to some traumatic incident and a person desperate for their assistance. I think of the myriad fatal crashes I have covered in my twenty years as a news reporter and photographer, and all the tragedy and grief that accompanies them.

Fortunately, I do not have to go to these incidents anymore; not very often anyway. Instead, police in Oregon have become extremely helpful to the news media by sharing photos of the crash scenes that they already take for their investigations.

Another Area Teacher Faces Sex Abuse Charges

Mt. Angel's School District makes statement over arrest and investigation.

(MT. ANGEL, Ore.) - Another teacher from the rural communities northeast of Salem has been arrested on Sex Abuse charges.

Mt. Angel School District Superintendent Bob Young says they were notified that Colby Molan, a PE and health teacher at Kennedy High School, was arrested and charged yesterday afternoon with one count of Sex Abuse III and one count of Official Misconduct. These are misdemeanor crimes.
