Oregon Reports Last Year`s Workplace Deaths

The numbers are better, but jobs in construction continue to be very dangerous.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Construction jobs are still seeing too many fatalities; there were 12 in Oregon last year. Thirty-five people covered by Oregon's workers' compensation system died on the job during 2007, according to data compiled by the Department of Consumer and Business Services.

Oregon Gets Ready for Some Early Summertime Heat

The hot weather will be short-lived as a cooler weather system moves into the state on Sunday.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - River Bike Jumper Hot Hot Hot!!

That's what the National Weather Service says Oregon will see beginning Thursday as a ridge of high pressure builds over the Pacific Northwest and will intensify through Saturday. Afternoon high temperatures will soar well above normal with near record highs expected Thursday through Saturday.

For Salem and the mid-Willamette Valley, the high temperature Friday is expected to be in the mid to lower 90's.

Oregon Could Be The Finish Line for Obama

Barack Obama is expected to beat Hillary Clinton in Oregon by a double-digit margin.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Obama Clinton Democratic presidential hopefuls Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. Hillary Clinton will do battle in Oregon on May 20 for the state's 52 pledged delegates.

Hillary blew away Obama last night in West Virginia. With 100 percent of precincts reporting, Clinton won 67 to 26 percent. There were 28 delegates at stake -- Clinton won 20 delegates to Obama's eight. John Edwards, who left the race several months ago, got 7 percent of the vote.

Mannix Slithers to New Lows With Underhanded Political Smear

Mannix direct-mailed 60,000 GOP voters, alleging that his opponent got a woman pregnant, then paid for her to have an abortion.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Kevin Mannix and Mike Erickson The battle for the house seat soon to be vacated by longterm Congresswoman Darlene Hooley isn't anywhere near the final lap, but one Oregon politician, a lawyer named Kevin Mannix, has already dropped to basement level in his apparent goal of smearing a fellow Republican.

In a surprise move, Mannix actually played the abortion card.

Myanmar Faces New Catastrophe Without More Food Access

The official death toll reported by Myanmar’s Government has reached almost 32,000, with over 34,000 others missing.

(GENEVA) - Refugee in Myanmar in the wake of Cyclone Nargis. Unless more access to Myanmar is granted to allow aid to flow more quickly to victims of this month’s deadly cyclone, a second catastrophe could result, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) warned today.

Despite some progress, efforts to help the 1.5 million people affected by Cyclone Nargis must be enhanced, a spokesperson for OCHA told reporters in Geneva.

Retired Teacher Arraigned on Sex Abuse Charges

Both police and the prosecutors are asking any member of the public with additional information on the case to contact Detective Colleen Arient at the Stayton Police Department.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Overview of the Marion County Court Annex where John Lulay was arraigned on Sex Abuse charges. A retired teacher has been arraigned on two counts of Sex Abuse in the first degree in Salem, according to a statement released jointly today by the Marion County District Attorney's Office and Stayton Police.

They say retired Sublimity school teacher John Lulay was arraigned on the two counts of Sex Abuse in the first degree.

Home Invasion Near Aumsville Under Investigation

Sheriff's Deputies and Aumsville Police Officers searched the area but were unable to locate the suspects.

(AUMSVILLE, Ore.) - Marion County Sheriff's Deputies responded to a reported home invasion robbery which had just occurred at a rural residence located on Olney Street SE near Aumsville, Oregon. The deputies were sent to the residence at 2:42 PM.

Coast Guard Rescues Crew of Sinking Vessel (AUDIO)

Six men were rescued and one died after one vessel capsized and one began taking on water 25 miles northwest of La Push, Washington, today.

(SEATTLE) - Salem-News.com The skipper of a pleasure craft contacted the Coast Guard today to request assistance after his boat began to take on water 28 miles west of La Push.

A USCG helicopter crew and a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew were launched in Washington, and a helicopter crew from Canada were launched to assist.
