Iraq Veterans Reunite For Peacekeeping Role

The group from the Oregon Guard was personally requested by USARPAC after their stalwart performance in a similar exercise, titled "Khan Quest," in Mongolia in 2006.

(DHAKA, Bangladesh) - Salem-News.com Five soldiers of the Oregon Army National Guard that previously served together in Iraq as part of the 1st Cavalry Division's Task Force Baghdad and in Operation Southern Relief in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, have reunited for duty in support of a United Nations (UN) peace support operations training mission in Bangladesh.

The soldiers, who served together within the "Volunteers," of 2nd Battalion, 162nd Infantry, Oregon Army National Guard, in Iraq from 2004 to 2005 are part of a team of eight soldiers and airmen selected for their expertise to support Exercise Shanti Doot-2 (Ambassador of Peace).

Gresham Man Faces 20 Sex Offense Counts out of Deschutes County

Detectives say the alleged abuse occurred when the victim was between the age of 9 and 12.

(GRESHAM, Ore.) - 22-year old Travis Benjamin Amonson. A Gresham-area man was arrested Monday on 20 felony sex offense counts based on warrants issued in Deschutes County.

Police say the charges are related to an Oregon State Police investigation into allegations the suspect sexually abused a male relative during a three year period when they lived in the Redmond area.

Roadblocks in Afghanistan Leaves Hundreds of Refugees Stranded in Pakistan

More than 70,000 Afghans have been given the options of voluntary repatriation to Afghanistan or relocation to Pakistan.

Photo by Tim King Salem-News.com Hundreds of Afghan refugees set to leave Peshawar in Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province to return to their homeland have been left stranded after local tribal disputes shut down a key road between the two countries, the UN refugee agency reported today.

Over 360 Afghan families that had been processed for repatriation from Peshawar on Monday were unable to leave due to the roadblock along the Peshawar-Torkham highway.

Wyden to Address Oregon Guard in Salem

In 2009, the 41st Brigade will be sending 3,500 troops to Afghanistan or Iraq.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Ron Wyden Oregon Senator Ron Wyden will be the featured speaker at the opening of 13th Annual Oregon National Guard Ball and Officers Convention in Salem on Saturday.

Wyden will address ongoing efforts to improve the National Guard by making the Chief of the National Guard a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, identifying and providing needed equipment and increasing educational opportunities for GIs returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Military Crimes: Nothing Learned and Nothing Gained

In Vietnam we rallied blindly for accused soldiers when their crimes were terrible, and today we are blind and apathetic toward Marines whose charges are far less significant.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com One morning during the Vietnam War, soldiers who pillaged an entire village murdered hundreds of innocent civilians. One junior officer received a court martial and a slap on the wrist over it. That was the massacre at My Lai. The nation as a whole failed to comprehend the enormity of it.

Today, Marines who may or may not have been involved in the death of a single suspected insurgent are being prosecuted many say, without fairness, and they are watching the ruining of their lives as the Navy does their best to do them in. Nobody cares.

Oregon - Nationwide Gas Prices Hit Record Highs

In Salem, the average price hit a new record high today at $3.45 a gallon.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - pumping gas Here we go again.

The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded hit record highs in parts of Oregon today, as light, sweet crude hit a record $111.76 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange Monday. The average price in Oregon hit a record high this morning at $3.49 a gallon.

Diesel prices are also at record prices in some parts of the state. However in Salem, the average price is down 8-cents from it's record high at $4.07 a gallon.

West Salem Post Office to Alleviate Traffic Problems

The work will be done in two phases, according to Salem Postmaster Brad Bender.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - USPS image On Wednesday, April 16, in cooperation with the City of Salem, the Salem Post Office’s West Salem Station at 400 Glen Creek Rd N.W. will begin reconfiguring the layout and flow of its customer parking area.

The major change customers will observe is a reversal of the traffic flow through the parking area, which the City of Salem has advised will help reduce congestion in the area.

Earthquake Swarm Off Oregon Coast Puzzles Scientists

Few, if any, of these earthquakes would be felt on shore because they originate offshore and deep within the ocean.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - oregon earthquakes Scientists at Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center have recorded more than 600 earthquakes in the last 10 days off the central Oregon coast in an area not typically known for a high degree of seismic activity.

This earthquake “swarm” is unique, according to OSU marine geologist Robert Dziak, because it is occurring within the middle of the Juan de Fuca plate – away from the major, regional tectonic boundaries.

(ATLANTA) - Delta planes Delta Air Lines and Northwest Airlines Corporation today announced an agreement in which the two carriers will combine in an all-stock transaction with a combined enterprise value of $17.7 billion, creating America’s premier global airline.

The new airline, which will be called Delta, will provide employees with greater job security, an equity stake in the combined airline, and a more stable platform for future growth in the face of significant economic pressures from rising fuel costs and intense competition.
