Leaders of the Society of Professional Journalists Appoint Regional Director

Maben is no stranger to SPJ’s leadership. He joined the organization in 1987 as a student at the University of Oregon where he served as a campus chapter president.

(INDIANAPOLIS) - SPJ logo SPJ leaders are pleased to announce the appointment of Scott Maben as a Regional Director for the Society.

A Deputy City Editor for the Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Wash., Maben replaces Tom Henderson who has stepped down. He will work with SPJ chapters in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington to further the Society’s missions of ethics, freedom of information, diversity and education.

Lake Oswego Swim Coach Found Not Guilty on Sex Abuse Charges

A Linn County jury says not guilty to all six sex abuse counts against the Lake Oswego man.

(ALBANY, Ore.) - Not Guilty art Lake Oswego swim coach Don King has been found not guilty of sexual abuse charges related to his alleged touching of girls on his Lake Oswego High School team.

All six counts against Mr. King were dropped when the Linn County jury returned their not guilty verdicts Thursday. George Eder, a deputy district attorney in Linn County, reportedly said, "The evidence was squarely presented to the jury."

Barack Obama Visits Oregon Cities (VIDEO)

Obama's Oregon visit concluded just recently with his visit to Eugene where the "Stand For Change" Rally was held at the University of Oregon.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Bill Richardson and Barack Obama Barack Obama came to Oregon today, with stops in Eugene, Salem and Portland. His highly anticipated visit seemed to go off without a hitch and it featured a bonus in Portland in the form of a personal endorsement from Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico.

"Whether it was as a congressman or cabinet secretary, ambassador or governor, there are few more distinguished public servants in America than Governor Richardson, and I am deeply honored to have his support," Senator Obama said.

Oregon Fails to Indict Turban Attackers with a Hate Crime

(ROSEBERG, Ore.) - The Douglas County Oregon Court in Roseburg Three Oregon men who attacked a Sikh trucker and ripped a turban off his head, will not be charged with a hate crime. A Douglas County, Oregon grand jury declined to indict three men. The Sikh Coalition calls the matter disappointing.

The Coalition says they learned yesterday that the grand jury instead chose to indict the men on the lesser charges of harassment and theft in the third degree.

Coast Guard, San Mateo County Sheriff Dive on Vessel Wreckage

The wreckage was located approximately 3 nautical miles west of the Golden Gate Bridge.

(SAN FRANCISCO) - The Coast Guard, working in partnership with the San Mateo Country Sheriff's Department Dive Team and members of the San Francisco Police Department, has located what is believed to be the wreckage of the sailing vessel "Daisy."

Thursday afternoon at approximately 1:00 PM, the San Mateo County Sheriff's Dive Team and the Coast Guard Cutter SOCKEYE located a portion of the vessel underwater using side sonar equipment.

China Admits Shooting as 2,000 Tibetans Defy Sichuan Crackdown

Thousands of security forces have been drafted into traditionally Tibetan areas.

(KATHMANDU, Tibet) - Unrest in Tibet Thousands of Tibetans in southwestern China’s Sichuan province are still defying a Chinese crackdown in the area, staging protests calling for peaceful dialogue with their exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reports.

"In the Tsekhog [Zeku] area in Huangnan prefecture, the monks are continuing their peaceful protests as of March 20th," a protester told an Amdo dialect reporter from RFA’s Tibetan service.

Grannies Return for Vigil at Recruiting Office Today

"Blood and Roses" once again is the theme of Good Friday action.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Members of the Today at 11:00 AM, the Seriously Pissed Off Grannies will return for their second Good Friday Vigil at the Army/Marine Recruiting office at 1317 NE Broadway.

They say they will be wearing black as a symbol of mourning for all of those killed during 5 years of war. From 11:00 to noon there will be a silent vigil with the reading of the names of those killed in the war during the past year. The vigil will continue until 3:00 PM.

Winter storm watches and warnings that have been issued, and the death toll from the storms and flooding has risen to at least 14.

(NATION ) - AccuWeather.com maps A clipper system today will spread heavy snow across the Upper Midwest. Spring has arrived, but winter still dominates the weather across the northern tier of the nation.

The hardest hit area, where up to a foot could fall, will stretch from southeastern Minnesota through southern Wisconsin, north of Chicago and into northern Indiana and Ohio.
