Gas Prices Back Off Slightly for Spring Break

Gas prices often climb during Spring Break, but both the national and Oregon averages are down slightly this week, dropping a few cents from last week's record highs.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Gads station attendent "Gas prices are coming down a few cents from the record highs we set in the past week." AAA Oregon Public Affairs Director Marie Dodds says, "Even though it's spring break, a time when prices normally rise, the Oregon average for regular unleaded is down three cents this week to $3.43.

The national average also drops three cents to $3.26. The Oregon and national averages are both below their record highs of $3.462 for Oregon set on March 17th, and $3.285 for the national average set on March 16th.

While some people wave flags and others protest the war, one Oregonian spends his life paying respects at these somber events and he records those images that only an experienced world class photographer can take. Oregon Wine Industry Comes Together to Support Active Wine Tourism

The five-day tour is unique because it gets people out of their cars, away from tasting rooms, and into the vineyards themselves.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - Wine glass Wineries, wine-related businesses, and tourism associations in Oregon have rallied behind a new effort to promote active wine tourism in the Oregon wine country. So far, 14 organizations have signed up to sponsor the Oregon Wine Adventure, a new multisport wine tour in the area.

"This is a brand new concept in Oregon and, as far as we can tell, in the wine industry worldwide," explains Jeannine Heidenreich of the Convention & Visitors Association of Lane County, one of the original supporters of the concept.

Red Cross Helps Monmouth Resident in Wake of Fire

The Red Cross provided Sparks with support for food, clothing and shoes.

(MONMOUTH, Ore.) - Red Cross flag A team of two volunteers with the Willamette Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to the scene of a house fire on Old Fort Road in Monmouth Monday.

They say the homeowner, 73-year old Sandy Sparks of Monmouth, was having Easter Dinner with her family when the fire burned her home Sunday afternoon/evening. A house guest was also away from the home at the time of the fire.

Oregon Community Foundation Celebrates New Regional Office Opening

OCF is celebrating the opening of its newest regional office with an open house at the Dye House, Mission Mill Museum.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com The Oregon Community Foundation is celebrating two new beginnings this week. They have a new office, located at 707 13th Street SE in downtown Salem.

And, they have a new Regional Director, Maureen Thomas. She was appointed as the new Director, North Willamette Valley, for OCF in January of 2008.

U.S. Death Toll Rises in Iraq and Afghanistan

Military casualty numbers jump again for the second time in recent weeks with 10 deaths reported since March 17th.

(SALEM, Ore.) - War Casualties artwork Several American military personnel have been killed in both Iraq and Afghanistan in recent days. Of seven deaths reported by the Department of Defense, four occurred in Iraq and three were reported in Afghanistan.

In Afghanistan, two of the deaths were combat related and the second appears to have been connected to an accident. In Iraq all four deaths were reportedly combat related.

Congressman Frank to Introduce Federal Marijuana Decriminalization Bill

(BOSTON, Mass.) - U.S. Representative Barney Frank The Committee for Sensible Marijuana Policy today applauded U.S. Representative Barney Frank's (D-4th MA) announcement that he would introduce federal marijuana decriminalization legislation that parallels CSMP's statewide effort to create sound marijuana policies.

Frank announced his bill to reform smalltime marijuana penalties – a position shared by the majority of Massachusetts voters – during his appearance on HBO’s "Real Time with Bill Maher" over the weekend.

DHS Recognized for Improving Kids` Mental Health care

The DHS Children's System Change Initiative allowed the increase the availability and quality of children's mental health care.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem-News.com More children in the state are receiving mental health care because of changes that were initiated several years ago by the Oregon Department of Human Services, according to the National Center for Children in Poverty, which calls the changes "innovative."

The center's recent report "Towards Better Behavioral Health for Children, Youth and Their Families" praised the DHS Addictions and Mental Health Division for making improvements to the children's mental health system.
