Free Formula in Hospitals is Reducing Natural Breastfeeding

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants be exclusively fed breast milk for the first six months of life.

(PORTLAND ,Ore.) - Salem-News.com Providing free infant formula to breastfeeding mothers upon hospital discharge leads women to stop nursing their babies sooner than they had planned, according to a new study from the Oregon Department of Human Services.

Breast milk is the best form of nutrition for infants, with documented benefits such as reduced risk of infectious disease, respiratory infections, allergies and chronic disease.

Dramatic Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue Delivers Surfer to Safety (VIDEO)

The surfer was safely rescued from a cove near Otter Rock.

(DEPOE BAY, Ore.) - Coast Guard rescue of a surfer in Oregon, Depoe Bay, 2-11-08 The Coast Guard rescued a surfer Sunday who became stranded by strong currents in a cove south of Depoe Bay, Oregon. The call came into the Lincoln County, Oregon 911 Dispatch Center at 1:41 PM.

They in turn contacted the Coast Guard to report a surfer in distress near Devil's Punch Bowl State Park. This is in an area known as Otter Rock which is probably the most frequently surfed spot on the central Oregon coast.

Oregon Average for Gas Rises Above National Price

The national average continues to decline, but here in Oregon pump prices are on the rise.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Gas station "Oregon's statewide average for regular unleaded is up this week, while the national average continues to decline." AAA Oregon Public Affairs Director Marie Dodds says, "

The Oregon average increases three-and-a-half cents to $2.98, while the national average drops nearly two cents to $2.96, and is at its lowest level in more than three months. Both the Oregon and national averages are less than $3 per gallon for the third week in a row."

OBA Supports Tracking Greenhouse Gases

HB 3610 would require agencies to evaluate the costs and benefits of reducing the gases that cause global warming to determine the impact on Oregon’s economy.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Toyota Prius Hybrid Good policy relies on good information. That’s the concept behind a bill before the Oregon House this week. Oregon Business Association has been working with Rep. Jackie Dingfelder on House Bill 3610. She plans to hold two hearings on the bill in the House Energy and the Environment Committee.

House Bill 3610 would clarify that the Environmental Quality Commission has the authority to gather more specific information on exactly how much greenhouse gas is emitted in Oregon, or in connection with Oregon’s energy consumption.

Thousands Flee Deadly Attacks on Three West Darfur Towns

– UN refugee agency An estimated 4,000 to 6,000 Darfurian refugees have sought refuge around Birak, while a similar number is believed to be near Koruk, also in eastern Chad.

(FIGEIRA, Chad) - Children at the International Rescue Committee kindergarden in Hamadiya IDPs camp, Zalingei, West Darfur. As many as 12,000 Sudanese have fled across the border into Chad since Friday’s deadly attacks, reportedly by Janjaweed militia supported by national armed forces, against three towns in West Darfur, the United Nations refugee agency reported today.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and its humanitarian partners have dispatched an emergency mission to Figeira, in the Birak area of Chad’s volatile eastern border region, to assess the situation, according to information released by the agency.
