Over 33,000 Oregonians Add Names to Health Insurance List

The first confirmations will be mailed Wednesday to people whose names have been entered on the reservation list.
(SALEM, Ore.) -
At the beginning of its second week of accepting names, the state has entered the names of 33,365 people on the reservation list for a chance to receive an application for the Oregon Health Plan's Standard benefit package.
"The high number of reservations is the best evidence we have of the great demand for health insurance," said Jim Edge, state Medicaid director in the Oregon Department of Human Services.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) -
Hundreds of same sex couples in committed, lifelong relationships lined up at county offices across Oregon to take advantage of a new domestic partnership law that went into effect today.
"Caring, committed couples have waited years, in many cases decades, for access to the basic protections associated with Oregon's domestic partnership law," said Jeana Frazzini, executive director of Basic Rights Oregon, a group that works to end discrimination. "Today, these couples will have the rights and legal protections they deserve."

Double Fatal Traffic Crash on Highway 6 near Banks

(BANKS, Ore.) -
Two Banks-area residents, including an 8-month pregnant woman, died Sunday night after losing control of their car and crashing into another vehicle on Highway 6 near Banks.
Preliminary investigation by Oregon State Police troopers indicates that Sunday at approximately 10:25 PM, a 1989 Volvo 740 four-door driven by 28-year old Misty L. White was eastbound on Highway 6 near milepost 50 when it lost control on an icy section.

UCLA Study on Same-Sex Marks Implementation of Oregon`s New Law

Today, Monday, is the first time same-sex couples can become domestic partners in Oregon.
(LOS ANGELES) -
Today, the Williams Institute at UCLA School of Law released two new research studies, one estimating that same-sex domestic partnerships will have a positive impact on the biennial state budget of $1.5 million to $3.7 million, the other analyzing U.S. Census data to provide demographic and economic information for the almost 11,000 same-sex couples in Oregon.
This information is especially relevant as today, for the first time, same-sex couples in Oregon may become domestic partners, following last Friday's ruling by a federal judge to lift an injunction on the domestic partnership law.

Urgent Amber Alert Issued in Kansas for Suspect and Child

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation canceled the Amber Alert after the boy was found safe in Denton Texas on Monday morning. The suspect was taken into custody at that time.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation has canceled an Amber Alert for a boy who was abducted in Kansas city. They say the boy's mother and younger sibling were found dead Sunday morning and the suspect was considered armed and dangerous.
The suspect and the victim were apparently last Seen at 2043 S. 10th Terrace, Kansas City, Kansas. Seth Guerrero, the victim, is a 3-year old Hispanic male with brown eyes and brown hair.

Nate is no stranger to a uniform. He has served not one, but two combat tours in Iraq with the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division, earning the rank of sergeant.

The son of Salem-News.com's Tim King, Nate (King) Tasch, graduated from a 17-week program at the Southern Arizona Law Enforcement Academy and is now a sheriff's deputy in Cochise County, Arizona.
"I am extremely proud of Nate and I know he will serve people in Arizona well. He made it through a very rigorous program and has again proven that he has what it takes to rise to a challenge and meet or exceed it," Tim King said.
