Defense Leaders Honor Troops Service, Sacrifice on Veterans Day

“We owe each and every one of them a debt of gratitude,” said Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - This weekend Americans will celebrate the service and sacrifice of tens of millions of citizens who have donned a military uniform for their country, the top two defense leaders said in their Veterans Day messages to the troops.

Gates said he takes the Defense Department’s obligation to improve the treatment and benefits of those servicemembers who have sacrificed very seriously.

Veterans Day Activities Across Oregon

Veterans Day is a national tribute that traces its roots to World War I.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon communities, towns and cities are planning special events, parades or other gatherings to honor military veterans on Veterans Day, November 11th.

Events in Oregon vary from the annual Albany Veterans Day parade on November 10th, the largest parade west of the Mississippi River, to other parades and events scheduled on various dates in cities throughout the state.

UPDATE: Amber Alert Issued for Two Texas Kids

The Forney Police Department and the State of Texas canceled the Amber Alert after the suspect vehicle was located.

(FORNEY, Texas) - An Amber Alert issued for Two Texas Children has been canceled. The Forney Police Department and the State of Texas issued the Amber Alert after the children were abducted on Friday afternoon.

Two boys, aged 12 and 16 are missing. The suspect is Lelah Jeanne Sullivan, a 48 year old white female with brown hair and brown eyes, five foot six inches tall, she weighs 115 pounds.

Keizer Medical Marijuana Fiasco Obliterated

(SALEM, Ore.) - Anthony Wyatt Beasley of Keizer, Oregon has been vindicated, as has the Oregon Medical Marijuana Act... although the officials in Keizer and Marion County are clearly too dishonest to admit it.

In the November 9th 2007 issue the Salem Statesman-Journal newspaper reported that the Marion County grand jury convened for the case refused to indict on the charge of unlawful manufacture of a controlled substance within 1,000 feet of a school, a class A felony (the same felony class as Murder) returning a finding of 'not true bill'.

Violence Erupts in Pakistan After Bhutto Placed Under House Arrest

The United States is urging Pakistan to end the house arrest of Benazir Bhutto.

(ISLAMABAD, Pakistan) - Pakistani police have cordoned off the residence of former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and placed her under house arrest in a move to try and stop her from leading an anti-government rally against President Pervez Musharraf later today.

Police were deployed at Bhutto's residence along with steel, concrete, and barbed-wire barricades. Other personnel patrolled on motorcycles, horseback and in armored vehicles. At least 12 Bhutto supporters were arrested.

With Bad Weather Coming, Searchers Desperate to Find Missing Professor

Some 100 miles of wilderness in the Willamette National Forest has been CLOSED to the public due to the search.

(McKENZIE BRIDGE, Ore.) - The air and ground search for a University of Oregon professor missing since Sunday will get back underway this morning with a sense of urgency with bad weather expected for the area over the next few days. Even some of Daming Xu's colleagues joined the search effort yesterday.

He is believed to be without warm clothing, food, water or a cell phone.

(MONMOUTH, Oregon) - Western Oregon University is celebrating record enrollment for the 2007-08 academic year, with 5,037 students, up 148 from last year.

About 20 percent of the entering freshman class are from underrepresented minority backgrounds, nearly double the number in 2005, and the retention rate for freshmen who entered in 2006 is 72 percent, a significant increase over the previous year.
