Holding Period for Oregon`s Biggest Surf Contest Begins

Three Month Holding Period marks the beginning of the Pacific Big Wave Season.

(LINCOLN CITY, Ore.) - Some of the biggest names in professional surfing will be in Oregon for the Pacific Northwest's epic "2007 Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic." The contest is regularly held in twenty to thirty foot plus surf, with surfers being launched into the gigantic waves with high tech jet ski's.

The holding period for this year's competition opened this week and extends through December 31st 2007. Contest organizers are monitoring swell and weather conditions and will offer a 48 hour notice when conditions look optimal. the Nelscott Reef Tow In Classic requires a large swell with little or no wind in order to hold the contest.

Coast Guard Cleans Derelict Vessel in Washington

The Coast Guard says the Heron was first discovered to be holed and discharging oil in 2005.

(SEATTLE, Wa.) - The Coast Guard has began the monitored cleanup and removal of the 141-foot derelict fishing vessel Heron from Everett, Washington today. The former fishing craft has been a major source of pollution in the area, and is an example of how poorly maintained vessels can impact marine populations and the local shoreline.

The Coast Guard says the Heron was first discovered to be holed and discharging oil in 2005.

UN Envoy Discusses Situation With Top Myanmar General

The UN Human Rights Council in Geneva opened a special session on Myanmar amid denunciations of the “the brutal crack-down” by the authorities there.

(UNITED NATIONS) - Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Special Envoy to Myanmar Ibrahim Gambari today met with the South-East Asian nation’s top general on the last day of his mission in response to the deteriorating situation there amid reports of the use of force and of the arrest and beating of demonstrators.

The meeting with Senior General Than Shwe in Naypyitaw, the capital, “to discuss the current situation in Myanmar” lasted over one hour, a UN news release from Geneva said.

Renowned Russian Artists Fly into Salem For Exhibit

The exhibit is called “From Russia, With Love,” and includes more than 30 of their new original oil paintings and signed and numbered limited edition prints.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Two of Russia’s most renowned artists will be in Salem October 6th to launch a month-long exhibit of their work at Alessandro’s Ristorante & Galleria, 120 Commercial Street NE.

Irene Sheri and Andrew Atroshenko are flying to Salem via Los Angeles from their homes in St. Petersburg. “We’re especially proud because these artists will appear jointly in no other American city,” said Roger Yost, the Alessandro’s owner whose gallery has created an international buzz.

Salem City Council Decides Sidewalk Issue

Salem sidewalks have had their share of debate, and a new move by the city council is drawing new criticism.

(SALEM, Ore.) - At their meeting Monday evening, the Salem City Council heard the second reading of Mayor Janet Taylor's motion to phase in return of maintenance and repair responsibilities of sidewalks to the landowners abutting those sidewalks.

Stolen Truck Lands Jail Visitors Behind Bars

Marion County Jail visitors stay longer than anticipated.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Deputies in Salem had it easy today during one arrest. Two people operating a stolen Toyota pick-up apparently decided to use it to pick to visit a friend at the Marion County Jail. The visit ended up being longer than they anticipated.

A report about a stolen truck that disappeared from the city of Salem over the weekend went out just after 8:30 AM. He says deputies were surprised to find the 1984 Toyota truck in the parking lot at the jail with two people in it.

UN Insists Myanmar Release Detainees, Political Prisoners

They're calling for decisive international action to prevent a repeat of the massacres that marked a pro-democracy uprising nearly two decades ago.

(UNITED NATIONS) - The UN Human Rights Council today strongly deplored the continued violent repression of peaceful demonstrations in Myanmar, calling on the authorities to release without delay all those recently arrested as well as all political detainees, including democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi.

The adoption of the resolution by consensus came after Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Special Envoy to Myanmar, Ibrahim Gambari, met with the South-East Asian nation’s top general to discuss the “current situation,” while UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Louise Arbour called on the Government to give a full account of those killed, injured and arrested in the anti-Government protests that began last month.
