Westlund Enters Race for Oregon State Treasurer

Westlund became a Democrat last year after running for Governor as an independent.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Oregon Senator Ben Westlund (D-Bend) announced Wednesday that he is running for State Treasurer in a press conference at the Capitol with Governor Kulongoski.

“As Oregon’s next state Treasurer, I will draw on my twenty year business career and ten years as a legislator to provide a voice for investing in Oregon’s future -- a strong voice for the stewardship of Oregon’s financial and natural resources,” Westlund said.

Oregon Police Investigate Black Bear Killing

(ZIG ZAG, Ore.) - Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Division is asking for the public's help in developing information to identify the person(s) responsible for killing a cub black bear and leaving it on an unnamed logging road about 9 miles north of Highway 26 off Lolo Pass Road.

On Tuesday afternoon, hunters reported finding a dead black bear cub on a logging road about 9 miles north of Lolo Pass Road in Clackamas County. The black bear appears to be less than one year old and was shot once in the head as it was walking on the road.

Murder Suspect Arrested in Hillsboro

The suspect will be Arraigned for the May 5th Murder of an Aloha Man.

(HILLSBORO, Ore.) - Police say 18-year-old Pablo Guzman was arrested Tuesday for the May 20th murder of 27-year-old Constantino Cruz. He will is being arraigned at today.

Investigators say Tuesday at approximately 3:00 PM, detectives from the Washington County Major Crimes Team arrested Guzman at the intersection of SW 206th Avenue and SW Francis Street in Aloha.

Servicemen Missing From Vietnam War Identified

They were part of a crew on a C-130 Hercules that crashed near Da Nang, South Vietnam in 1968.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The Defense Department announced says the remains of two U.S. servicemen, missing in action from the Vietnam War, have been identified.

They are Captain Warren R. Orr Jr., U.S. Army, of Kewanee, Illinois; and Airman 1st Class George W. Long, U.S. Air Force, of Medicine, Kansas. Long was buried September 30th in Medicine and Orr's burial is being set by his family.

(SILVERTON, Ore.) - President Bush today turned his back on the millions of children across the country who lack health insurance by vetoing a bipartisan bill to reauthorize the Children's Health Insurance Program.

Now all eyes in Oregon are on Representative Greg Walden, the only member of Oregon's congressional delegation to vote against the compromise bill crafted by the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate. Representative Walden voted against the compromise, even though it dropped the Medicare provisions he had objected to in a previous version of the bill.

Man Dies in Crash on Highway 126W West of Eugene

Oregon State Police troopers from the Springfield Area Command office are continuing the investigation with the assistance of the Lane County District Attorney's Office.

(EUGENE, Ore.) - Police say a Veneta-area man died Tuesday evening after his vehicle was struck by another vehicle on Highway 126W about five miles west of Eugene. Oregon State Police are investigating the fatal crash that also resulted in six other people being transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Smith Hearing Focuses on VA Health Care

Sex Abuse Victims Join Lawsuit Against Salem Mormon Church

In February, two brothers files suit against the Mormon Church claiming that the Church knew for several years about the dangerous tendencies of Timur Dykes, who was first convicted for childhood sexual abuse in the 1980s.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Four more men will file suit against the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints today, bringing the total to six, for abuse they say they suffered at the hands of one Timur Dykes.

This information was released by Portland attorney Kelly Clark, who frequently handles such cases on behalf of adult victims of child abuse.

Reporting System Can Help Prevent Veteran Suicide

U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging Holds Hearing on Veterans’ Health; Demonstrates Need to Expand National Violent Death Reporting System to All 50 States.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Dr. Mark Kaplan of Portland State University and a member of the Suicide Prevention Action Network USA’s National Scientific Advisory Council today testified at the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging hearing entitled “Veterans’ Health: Ensuring Care for our Aging Heroes” and voiced his support for the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS).

“NVDRS tracks the circumstances surrounding a suicide – for example, whether someone who died by suicide was being treated for depression, had discussed their intention with someone else or was in a difficult life circumstance so that a complete picture of the suicide is created,” Kaplan said.
