Salem Teen Will be Oregon D.A.R.E. Advisor

The Youth Advisory Board is composed of 50 members, one from each state. It gives D.A.R.E. graduates an opportunity to speak to issues impacting both national and worldwide D.A.R.E. programs.

(SALEM., Ore.) - Salem Police say they are proud to announce that a local student and graduate of the D.A.R.E. program has been selected to serve as an advisor on D.A.R.E. America's Youth Advisory Board.

Matthew Clarke, a 2004 D.A.R.E. graduate from Morningside Elementary School, is currently a freshman at South Salem High School and has a 3.48 GPA. He is described as a hard worker in school, and his activities include football, wrestling, baseball, Boy Scouts, and he is also a Salem Police Cadet.

Sex Offender Sought by Oregon State Police

Singleton is described as a black male, six foot four inches tall, who weighs approximately 250 pounds. He has black hair, brown eyes, may have grown a goatee.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Oregon State Police are in the lookout for a 32-year old registered sex offender. They say Darrell Lamar Singleton has warrants for his arrest issued by the Washington County Circuit Court for Burglary I and Theft I.

Sgt. David Thompson with Oregon State Police says Singleton has a previous conviction of Sex Abuse III.

"He is currently out of compliance with the sex offender requirements to register his home address. Please call 503-629-0111 with any information.

Flu Vaccinations‏ Urged by Health Officials

Oregon has now received more than 400,000 doses of influenza vaccine, compared to just 91,000 at this time last year.

(SALEM, Ore.) - Every year, too many people in Oregon get sick or even die from influenza. This season, there will be plenty of flu vaccine and public health officials are encouraging people to get their vaccinations.

"We expect a record amount of flu vaccine this year," said Susan Allan, M.D., J.D., M.P.H., state health director in the Oregon Department of Human Services Public Health Division. "There should be enough to immunize everyone who wants to avoid getting sick. And just as important, you should get vaccinated to protect the people you care about, especially if you have close contact with someone in a high risk group."

Washington Family Sought by Authorities Located in Canada

The family was taken into custody by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

(PLENTYWOOD, Mont.) - The Clark County Sheriff's Office was notified by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police early this morning that they had located Jeffrey and Kim Spady, a Washington couple on the run from authorities for numerous counts of Rape of a Child 1st, 2nd and 3rd degree.

Canadian police say they had located the Spady family around 1:30 AM, but had not contacted them. They told Washington authorities that the family was camping at the Saskatchewan Landing Provincial Park near the town of Swift Current.

Oregon State Police from Portland Awarded

OSP Lifesaving Awards are given to a Portland-area sergeant and trooper.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - An Oregon State Police Fish & Wildlife Division Sergeant and Senior Trooper will receive the Oregon State Police "Harold R. Berg Lifesaving Award" on October 1st.

The recognition involves the efforts of these officers who spotted a 34-year old exhausted man suffering from hypothermia, who was attempting to cling to a buoy in the middle of the Willamette River near Elk Rock Island in the Milwaukie area.

Democrats Block Sale of F-14 Parts to Iran

Wyden’s “Stop Arming Iran Act” is included in Defense Authorization Bill.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Working to stop the sale of surplus aircraft parts to Iran, the U.S. Senate today passed the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2008, which included a provision based on the “Stop Arming Iran Act” introduced by Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR).

The provision will prohibit the Pentagon from selling surplus parts and equipment for F-14 fighter aircraft. Iran is the only country—other than the United States—that flies F-14s.

Seven-Year Old Girl Escapes Kidnapper in Vancouver

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male, approximately 45-50 year old, five foot ten inches tall, weighing approximately 150 pounds.

(VANCOUVER, Wa.) - Police say a man tried to kidnap a seven-year old girl in Vancouver this morning, but her eleven-year old brother pushed the suspect and police say the girl was able to get away. Officers from Vancouver Police responded to the 3500 block of "S" Street for the attempted kidnap this morning at 8:43 AM.

Officers arriving on the scene say they contacted the 11-year old male and his 7-year old sister. Their initial statements to police indicated that a man had been seen walking around the 3500 block of "S" Street while the victim and her brother were walking to school at Washington Elementary.

Dow Rallies to Hit All-Time High

Dow Jones industrial average surges almost 200 points.

(NEW YORK) - The Dow hit an all-time high on Monday, on signs that the big banks are starting to put the worst of the credit and housing worries behind them -- and on hopes that the Fed will continue to cut interest rates.

The Dow Jones industrial average added over 191 points, after rising as high as 14,115.27 and setting a new all-time intra-day high. The S&P 500, up over 20 points, and the tech-fueled Nasdaq composite, up over 39 points.

Portland Public Schools Introduce New Superintendent

Carole Smith will start the job as superintendent after the School Board vote Tuesday morning.

(PORTLAND, Ore. ) - At a press conference today at Franklin High School, the Board of Education for Portland Public Schools introduced Carole Smith as the next Superintendent.

In meetings Monday morning with PPS senior staff, unions and principals, School Board directors praised Smith for her passion and commitment to public education.
