Couple Arrested in Canby for Assaulting Each Other After Girlfriend Points Rifle

This entire incident occurred after both suspects had been drinking all night and got into an argument over the male going to work.

(CANBY, Ore.) - On Saturday morning about 8:40 AM, Canby Police Officers responded to the report of a disturbance involving a rifle at 2750 N Maple Court.

The caller told dispatch that a man and woman were fighting in the front yard and the man had taken a rifle from the female and threw it in a flower bed.

When officers arrived they could see empty Budweiser cans strewn across the yard and into the street.

Former Salem Officer Found Not Guilty on Rape Charges

The trial is over for Sterling Alexander, and the jury has found him not guilty on five counts, guilty on two lesser charges, and two were declared a mistrial.

(SALEM, Ore.) - The trial of a Salem Police officer ended today with Sterling Alexander emerging from the Marion County court room of Judge Albin Norblad more closely a free man than he has been in months.

The jury deliberated over 24 hours in this complicated case. At one point, it seemed they had reached an impasse.

Salem Police Seize Meth from West Salem Apartment

(SALEM, Ore.) - Salem Police say they seized 3.64 pounds of methamphetamine from a West Salem apartment and arrested 4 adults last Friday evening.

They say this information was not released earlier because investigators were following additional leads and felt releasing the information may jeopardize those leads.

Professors Receive Grant to Bring Computer Games to College Classrooms

The grant is for two years, and will also involve several undergraduate student assistants.

(VANCOUVER, Wa.) - College students studying computer science may one day be able to bring their gaming hobbies and their studies together in the classroom.

The National Science Foundation has awarded nearly $150,000 to Scott Wallace, assistant professor of computer science at Washington State University Vancouver, and Andrew Nierman, assistant professor of computer science at the University of Puget Sound, to develop computer game based undergraduate computer science curricula.

(BEND, Ore. ) - The Oregon Army National Guard launched a helicopter from Salem just before 6:00 AM today to aid in the search for a missing seven year old boy.

The boy, Chase Otterbach, was last seen around 8:30 PM last night while riding a black and red motorcycle at an off-highway vehicle area about 25 miles east of Bend. The boy was camping with his family at the off-highway vehicle area.

Health Warning Lifted for Detroit Lake East of Salem

DHS advises people who recreate in Oregon water bodies to always be alert of signs of algae blooms.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - A health advisory prompted by high algae levels found in Detroit Lake Reservoir, located 60 miles from Salem, was lifted late Tuesday by the Oregon Department of Human Services, Marion County Environmental Health, and the Willamette National Forest.

The advisory went into effect on May 30th.

Water sampling by the Willamette NF has confirmed reduced levels of blue-green algae that can produce toxins harmful to humans and animals.

Oregon House Approves Landmark Education Budget

Since the 1997 session, no K-12 budget has been approved by a chamber of the legislature before July.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - The Oregon House of Representatives Tuesday unanimously approved a K-12 education budget that designates $6.245 billion for public education in the next biennium.

OSU Study: Salvage Logging, Replanting Increased Biscuit Fire Severity

The study was done in areas that had burned twice – once in the 1987 Silver Fire, and again in the massive 2002 Biscuit Fire, one of the largest forest fires in modern United States history.

(CORVALLIS, Ore.) - The Biscuit Fire of 2002 burned more severely in areas that had been salvage logged and replanted, compared to similar areas that were also burned in a 1987 fire but had been left to regenerate naturally, a new study concludes.

The analysis, one of the first to ever quantify the effect of salvage logging and replanting on future fire severity, is being published this week in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a professional journal, by scientists from Oregon State University and the Pacific Northwest Research Station of the USDA Forest Service.
