More Oregon Army National Guard Return from Afghanistan this Weekend

Oregon Guard soldiers have had a long, slow ride home.

(SALEM, Ore.) - More soldiers from the 41st Brigade Combat Team are scheduled to return to this weekend.

The first flight with 140 soldiers will arrive in Portland at approximately 4:00 PM. A second flight with 112 soldiers will arrive Sunday around 6:00 AM.

Atlantis Crew to Inspect Heat Shield, Prepare for Space Station Docking

Atlantis is also delivering a new crew member to the International Space Station.

(CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida) - During its first full day in orbit, the STS-117 crew will inspect Space Shuttle Atlantis’ heat shield and prepare for Sunday’s arrival at the International Space Station.

Crew members will use Atlantis’ robotic arm and an orbiter boom extension to check out the spacecraft’s underside, nose cap and leading edges of the wings.

The inspections are conducted to see if any damage occurred to the heat shield during the climb to orbit that began when Atlantis lifted off at 7:38 PM EDT from Kennedy Space Center, Fla.

Salem, Oregon Group Donates Walking Canes to Injured National Guard Soldiers

The group presented Soldiers with hand-carved walking canes.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - A Salem, Ore. senior group has turned their collective hobby of carving into a philanthropic endeavor.

About ten members of the Capitol Carvers made the three-hour drive to Madigan Army Medical Center in Fort Lewis, Wash., to meet with National Guard Soldiers who are recovering at MAMC from wounds received while deployed to the Middle East.

Police Seek Suspect in West Salem Bank Robbery

Witnesses say the man has a tattoo of a dragon on his upper right arm and a wolf with a dream catcher on his upper left arm.

(WEST SALEM, Ore.) - Police say the Maps Credit Union at 476 Glen Creek Rd NW was robbed at 5:57 PM on Friday. Salem Police say that at this point, it is unknown if the suspect is armed.

The suspect is a white male in his 50's, 6'0", with a reported weight of 200 pounds, with short gray hair, an unshaven face, and he was last seen wearing a tan baseball cap, gray tank top, and shorts.

Salem Police Need Help Locating Alleged Child Sex Offender

(SALEM, Ore.) - Police Detectives are asking for help locating a man who they say sexually abused his 7-year-old granddaughter.

Salem Police say Jessie Ballew took his personal computer in for repairs on April 4th. "When the repairman who examined the computer found 10 naked pictures of a 3-5 year old girl on the computer he contacted the Salem Police Department."

Gates Recommends Mullen Replace Pace as Joint Chiefs Chairman

Pace will continue to serve as chairman until his term ends Sept. 30th. He was the first Marine to hold the position.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - To avoid a contentious reconfirmation process, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates will recommend that President Bush nominate Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Michael G. Mullen to replace Marine Gen. Peter Pace as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In a Pentagon news conference today, Gates said he also will recommend Marine Gen. James E. Cartwright for the position of vice chairman.

Cartwright is the commander of U.S. Strategic Command.

Backyard Burn Ban Starts June 16th in Marion and Linn Counties

These burn restrictions expand the geographical scope to include areas outside the three- and six-mile limit.

(SALEM, Ore.) - All open and backyard burning will be prohibited beginning June 16th in those portions of Marion and Linn Counties that lie within the Santiam Unit of Oregon Department of Forestry's North Cascade District.

The Department of Forestry is cooperating with several local fire departments including Idanha-Detroit, Gates, Mill City, Lyons, Stayton, Sublimity, Silverton, Drakes Crossing, Aumsville, Turner and Jefferson. Only permitted and approved logging slash burning and agricultural burning will be allowed depending on weather conditions.

Oregon Pigeon Hobbyists Charged for Killing Birds of Prey

Three Oregon cases are part of a nationwide effort to stop the illegal killing of hawks, peregrine falcons, and other birds of prey.

(PORTLAND, Ore.) - Federal authorities have charged three Oregon men with unlawfully attempting to take, capture, and kill red-tailed and Cooper's hawks, and/or peregrine falcons, in violation of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

The defendants, all leaders of “roller pigeon” clubs, were arraigned in the Portland, Oregon, United States District Court on June 8th. The charges are part of a larger investigation across the United States—Operation High
Roller—that targets roller pigeon owners who kill hawks and falcons, despite their protected status under federal law.

Delta Returns Commercial Air Service to Oregon’s Capitol City

Salem also hopes to land Las Vegas based Allegiant Airlines within the next few years.

(SALEM, Ore. ) - Hundreds of Salem-area residents cheered Thursday as the city’s first commercial passenger flight touched down at McNary Field in over a decade.

Salem Mayor Janet Taylor said Delta’s arrival in Salem will put the city on the map as an alternative destination to cities such as Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco.

The search to find a carrier for Salem began six years ago.
