Man Accused of Killing Salem School Bus Driver Due in Court Friday

(SALEM) - The man accused of hitting and killing a Salem school bus is due back in court on Friday.

20-year old Corey Duffield of Salem faces charges of felony hit and run and assault, in connection with the death of 65-year old Gary Phillips.

Now it is likely that the charges will be elevated to include first-degree manslaughter.

Phillips was struck on Jan. 8th at about 6:10 AM at the Hawthorne Ave and D Street intersection near the Salem-Keizer School District bus barn.

Governor Announces New Program to Expand Health Care Workforce

(Salem) - As part of his efforts to expand access to healthcare for all Oregonians, Governor Kulongoski was joined by Oregon Health and Sciences University, Oregon State University and Samaritan Health Services to announce a new public-private partnership to establish an OHSU School of Medicine Campus in Corvallis.

The Governor also highlighted his “everything that works” plan for health care, which is built around three principles: reduce costs, expand access and improve quality.

House Fire in Jefferson Displaces Family

The Willamette Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.

(JEFFERSON) - Firefighters from Jefferson were called to a house fire at 1058 Talbot Rd. SE in Jefferson just after noon Thursday.

No one was home at the time of the fire which has been blamed on a propane heater too close to a wall.

Approximately half of the home suffered heavy fire damage and the other half heavy smoke damage.

Anna Nicole Smith Dead at 39

Beverly Hills publicist Edward Lozzi called Smith very funny and dumb like a fox.

(HOLLYWOOD, FL) - Anna Nicole Smith has died at the age of 39.

According to reports, Smith collapsed at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

At 1:38 PM EST a nurse traveling with Smith called 911. At 1:45 PM EST one of her bodyguards started CPR in her hotel room.

Hotel officials said Smith was "unresponsive." Emergency responders performed CPR at the scene, but she was pronounced dead at 2:49 PM EST.

Study: Autism Rate 1 in 150 U.S. Children

All children in the studies were eight years old because previous research has shown that most children with an ASD have been identified by this age for services.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported findings Thursday from the first and largest summary of prevalence data from multiple U.S. communities participating in an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) surveillance project.

The results showed an average of 6.7 children out of 1,000 had an ASD in the six communities assessed in 2000, and an average of 6.6 children out of 1,000 having an ASD in the 14 communities included in the 2002 study.

Heart Gallery of Oregon Opens Wednesday at State Capitol

Hundreds of Oregon children statewide are in need of permanent homes.

(SALEM) - The Heart Gallery of Oregon, a traveling photographic display featuring adoptable children, will open on Wednesday with a reception at the State Capitol
Galleria.

The exhibit features images capturing the spirit and personality of foster children needing permanent homes. Professional photographers from across the state have donated their time to the gallery, which features approximately 40 children.

Police Arrest Game Crazy Burglar

(SALEM) - Thursday morning, at 1:56 AM, Salem Police officers responded to a report of a burglary at "Game Crazy," a video game store at 4855 Commercial St. SE.

Dwight Simpson, the owner of Game Crazy, went to the store after being notified by his alarm company that the store alarm had been activated.

Upon his arrival, he and his wife saw that a front window had been broken out.

NATO Pledges More Troops, Support for Afghanistan

The mission in Afghanistan is described as one of the most challenging tasks NATO has ever taken on, but one that is a critical contribution to international security.

(SEVILLE, Spain) - The entire international community will step up its support for the Afghan people this year, NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer said here today at the start of the Seville Summit.

More forces will be added to the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force "to better create the conditions for reconstruction and development to take place," he said.
