The History of Oregon`s Tallest Lighthouse; Yaquina Head

The Cape Foulweather Lighthouse is one of the most-visited on the west coast, with over 400,000 visitors each year.

(NEWPORT, Ore.) - It took approximately one year, and over 370,000 bricks from San Francisco, to construct Oregon's tallest lighthouse Yaquina Head, also known as Cape Foulweather Lighthouse.

The 93 foot tower, double walled for insulation and dampness protection, is Oregon's tallest, and is located on a narrow point of land jutting due west into the Pacific Ocean north of Newport, at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area.

There was trouble with the lighthouse from the very beginning.

Driver and Passenger of Car Identified in Fatal School Bus Crash

The driver is identified as 25-year old Justin J. Gandy of Lyons. Police say his driving privileges were suspended at the time of the crash.

(LYONS) - Police investigators say two men died Thursday morning after losing control of their car and crashing into a school bus on Highway 226 south of Lyons. The bus driver and two small children were not injured.

Around 11:30 AM Thursday, a northbound 1989 Nissan Sentra four-door lost control while negotiating a shaded, icy curve.

Bill Would Provide Expanded Medical Services to Children With Disabilities

Bill package will provide access to health care for children with disabilities, while keeping families together.

(SALEM) - State Representatives Sara Gelser (D-Corvallis) and Kevin Cameron (R-Salem) announced at a press conference Thursday plans for a package of legislation (HB 2406-7) that will put needed health services in reach of medically fragile children and their families while keeping children and parents together.

Under the current system, many families raising children with complex disabilities are forced to bankrupt or artificially impoverish themselves or relinquish custody of their children to foster care or nursing homes in order to receive necessary medical services.

Salem Police Seek to End Identity Theft/Fraud Ring

The crimes took place in Oregon and California, at this time the losses are in excess of $100,000.

(SALEM) - Salem Police and Marion County Sheriff's deputies are investigating multiple forgeries and identity thefts that are related and involve a group of Hispanic suspects traveling through Oregon.

City of Salem Receives Grant For Railroad Bridge

This is the first private foundation grant the project has received and the city hopes it will encourage other private donors to join the effort.

(SALEM) - The City of Salem is the recipient of a $2500 grant from the Cycle Oregon Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation to assist in the conversion of the historic Union Street
Railroad Bridge into a dedicated bicycle and pedestrian facility.

The bridge crosses the Willamette River in downtown Salem, and when converted it will provide a critical half mile link in the local and regional bicycle and pedestrian transportation system.

The project connects with the state-designated Willamette River Water Trail.

(NEWPORT) - The Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory at Oregon State University is working with the Oregon Marine Mammal Stranding Network to test California sea lions for leptospirosis, a bacterial disease that can infect numerous animals, including humans.

Oregon Releases 2006 Population Survey

The 2006 Oregon Population Survey was conducted during the summer and fall of 2006.

(SALEM) - The State of Oregon Thursday released the findings of the 2006 Oregon Population Survey, which provides a wealth of data on income and other household characteristics, health insurance coverage, educational attainment, commuting choices, savings for retirement and education, child care arrangements, and Internet usage.

The telephone survey, conducted by the Northwest Research Group during the summer and fall of 2006, also provides information on Oregonians' perceptions, ranging from the quality of public services to their sense of community.

House Committee Moves Forward on Predatory Lending Protections

Consumer protection bills will now move to House floor for vote.

(SALEM) - The House Committee on Consumer Protection has approved a package of bills aimed at curbing predatory lending practices in Oregon.

The legislation, House Bills 2202 through 2205, passed the committee with broad bipartisan support, and will proceed next to the House floor for consideration.

“This is a major step toward protecting consumers who rely on these services,” said committee chair Rep. Paul Holvey (D-Eugene).

The great flavor of beer can be traced back to agriculture in the Pacific Northwest.

Washington and Oregon rank first and second respectively in U.S. production of hops -- the key ingredient in beer --and are responsible for 94 percent of the nation's hop production.

Be Aware! New Changes to Parking in Downtown Salem Take Effect Today

The city says downtown parking utilization will be formally surveyed at least once per year and parking uses will be adjusted to meet ongoing needs of downtown businesses and customers.

(SALEM) - The City of Salem wants you to Be Aware! that beginning Thursday, most on-street parking spaces in downtown Salem will have a two-hour time limit.

Spaces with a 30-minute time limit are available near most intersections.
