Oregon Public School Enrollment Increases During 2006-07

Oregon’s public school enrollment has increased nine times during the last ten years.

(SALEM) - State Schools Superintendent Susan Castillo has announced that the total number of Oregon elementary and secondary students enrolled in public schools continues to increase steadily.

According to counts reported by school districts, Oregon has 562,828 public school students – an increase of 3,613 since last year (+0.6%).

Salem Red Cross Volunteers Will Provide Emergency Relief in Florida

The local chapter of the American Red Cross frequently assists disaster victims in other regions of the country.

(SALEM) - Three volunteers of the Willamette Chapter of the American Red Cross have been assigned to the Red Cross tornado relief effort in Florida.

A national appeal was made late Saturday afternoon for 426 Red Cross volunteers, needed to assist with the tornado relief effort underway in Florida.

69 Percent of Eugene Businesses Fail Recent OLCC Minor Sales Checks

An OLCC inspector and minor volunteer did the compliance testing as part of the OLCC’s priority effort to curtail underage drinking, which is a serious problem in Oregon.

(EUGENE) - Nine of 13 licensed businesses tested in Eugene sold alcohol to a minor during a recent compliance operation conducted by the Oregon Liquor Control Commission.

“This is an alarming 69 percent sales rate, which is nearly triple the average statewide rate of 25 percent,” said Inspector Mark Jaehnig, of the OLCC’s Eugene office.

Store clerks who sell are cited into court and face at least a $350 fine.

Adam Burch Act Introduced to Punish Drug Dealers in Oregon

House Bill 2610 holds dealers criminally liable creating new Class A felonies.

(SALEM) - Beth Jackson of Keizer wants Oregon to take a page out of the federal drug laws handbook and her state legislator is ready to help her.

At Jackson’s request, Representative Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer) introduced House Bill 2610, the “Adam Burch Act”, to allow prosecutors to go after drug dealers who cause the death or serious injury of another person.

“We need a law in Oregon similar to the one the feds use,” said Thatcher referring to the Len Bias Act adopted by Congress 20 years ago in honor of the Boston Celtics basketball star who died from a cocaine overdose in 1986.

Police Investigating Adult Store Armed Robbery

The suspect is described as being a white male adult, approximately 18 years of age, 5’3”, 130 lbs, with blond wavy hair.

(SALEM) - At 1:00 AM Saturday morning, patrol deputies from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Adult Store, located at 155 Lancaster Drive SE, on the report of an armed robbery.

On arrival, they discovered that a single male adult armed with a handgun had robbed the store of an undisclosed amount of money.

The subject left the location prior to Sheriff’s deputies arrival and was believed to have fled north of the scene on foot.

Salem’s McNary Field Passed Over by Allegiant Air For Now

McNary Field has been without regularly scheduled air service since Horizon left the in 1993.

(SALEM) - Once again Oregon’s Capitol city will have to wait for regularly scheduled commercial air service.

Allegiant Air announced Friday that it will launch nonstop services in Oregon by connecting Redmond and Medford with Las Vegas this spring.

Twice-weekly links between Redmond Municipal Airport, Roberts Field, and McCarran will commence on March 29th.

Rogue Valley International-Medford Airport will also be served by Thursday and Sunday flights, beginning April 5th.

(SALEM) - House Republicans Friday announced their Oregon Stability and Investment Plan to create a rainy day fund that protects Oregon from future budget shortfalls.

Oregon Department of Revenue Offering Free Tax Help

Weekday sessions will be held at the Oregon Department of Revenue headquarters in Salem.

(SALEM) - Free help is now available through April 17th for taxpayers who need assistance preparing their 2006 income tax returns.

Representatives from Oregon Department of Revenue and AARP will staff Tax Aide sessions in Salem and Woodburn.

They will help prepare basic state and federal income tax returns for senior and low-income taxpayers.

Four Salem Teens Arrested After Car Break-in Spree

Police say all of the stolen goods from the vehicles were returned to their owners.

(SALEM) - Four Salem teenagers were arrested Friday morning after a series of car break-ins in northeast Salem.

Salem Police say the four were spotted breaking into a vehicle in the 3600 block of Beverly Ave. NE around 4:00 AM.

The four suspects ran from police, but were tracked down by a police K-9 unit and arrested.

Salem Drug Raids Lead to Three Arrests

In the two raids, police seized drugs and weapons.

(SALEM) - At 7:00 AM Friday morning, Marion County Street Crimes Detectives, assisted by Salem Police drug investigators, served search warrants simultaneously at two homes seizing methamphetamine, guns and drug paraphernalia.

The first was 1733 Park Ave NE.

Seized from that home was more than 3oz of methamphetamine and paraphernalia associated with the use of meth.

The second residence was 5379 Baxter Ct SE.

From that home detectives seized what they called small user amounts of methamphetamine, a rifle and handgun and drug paraphernalia.
