Governor Orders Flags at Half-Staff in Memory of Oregon Soldier

Sean Patrick Fennerty died on Saturday, January 20th, in the Anbar province of Iraq.

(SALEM) - Oregon Governor Ted Kulongoski has ordered all flags at public institutions be flown at half-staff on Saturday, in memory of Army Sgt. Sean Patrick Fennerty of Portland.

He died on Saturday, January 20th, in the Anbar province of Iraq.

Funeral services for Sgt. Fennerty have been set for Saturday, at 11:00 AM.

Salem Man Slashed by Intruder

Police say the suspect may have a dog bite on one of his arms.

(SALEM) - Salem police are asking for the public’s help in identifying a suspect who slashed another man with a knife in the victims basement Wednesday night.

Police say the 22-year-old victim heard his dog barking and started to search his home, located on 17th Street NE around 9:00 PM.

When the victim encountered the suspect, a struggle ensued, and the victim received two slash wounds to his forearm.

Rare Fish Washes Ashore Along Oregon Coast

A longnose skate is what is called a benthic fish, meaning it spends most of its time on the ocean floor.

(SEASIDE) - For the second time in three months, staff at the Seaside Aquarium have rescued a live fish that washed ashore at Seaside.

On Friday, a group of concerned citizens discovered something flopping around in the surf at Sunset Beach, just north of Seaside.

The creature turned out to be a longnose skate -- which was not only alive, but was an extraordinary find because this species usually lives well below the ocean surface.

Drunk Man Nearly Gets Away With Trainjacking

(EUGENE) - On Wednesday at about 1:10 AM, deputies from the Lane County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the Union Pacific railroad tracks near Judkins Point on the report of an intoxicated subject trying to drive a Union Pacific locomotive engine.

The locomotive was attached to several rail cars.

After being confronted, the subject was reported to be harassing the train crew and refusing to leave.

Oregon Lawmaker Introduces The “Stop Arming Iran Act”

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Working to end the Iranian government’s acquisition of sensitive military equipment, Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR), a senior member of the U.S. Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, introduced legislation today that would prohibit the Pentagon from selling surplus parts and equipment for F-14 fighter aircraft.

Wyden’s legislation would also prohibit the export of F-14 parts already sold.

Iran is the only country -- other than the United States --that flies F-14s.

Marion County Offender Sweep Lands 40 in Jail

During the sweep, two children were taken into protective custody by DHS.

(SALEM) - On Friday, January 19th during the evening hours an offender sweep in Marion County was conducted involving more than 50 representatives from Marion County law enforcement agencies, the Marion County DA’s Office and the Department of Human Services – Child Welfare.

During the sweep nearly 40 arrests were made on outstanding arrest warrants, parole/probation violations and new crimes.

Governor Appoints McLain to Oregon State Police Superintendent

If confirmed, McLain will be the 10th OSP Superintendent in the department's history since formation in 1931.

(SALEM) - Governor Ted Kulongoski on Thursday announced the appointment of Acting Superintendent Tim McLain to the position of Superintendent of the Oregon State Police, pending State Senate confirmation.

Following the retirement of Superintendent Ronald Ruecker, McLain was appointed as interim Superintendent on December 1st, 2006.

McLain, age 50, has been a member of the Oregon State Police for over 27 years, originally starting as a patrol trooper in Roseburg.

Kerry to Forgo 2008 Presidential Campaign

Instead the Senator says he will focus his attention on the war in Iraq.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - Senator John Kerry (D-Mass) has renewed his call for an exit strategy that will bring our troops back from Iraq and said he will seek to force the President to set a date for withdrawing troops

Kerry said he will soon introduce legislation with a comprehensive strategy for achieving a political solution and creating a deadline for getting our troops home.

Kerry's legislation would call for a full scale diplomatic initiative in the region.
