U.S. Army Soldier From Oregon Killed in Iraq

Stg. Sean Patrick Fennerty is the 48th soldier with Oregon ties to have died in the Iraq war.

(PORTLAND) - On January 20th, Sgt. Sean Patrick Fennerty, of Portland, was killed in action while conducting combat operations against Anti-Iraqi forces in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq.

He was a passenger in a M1124 high mobility multi-purpose wheeled vehicle which was struck by an IED or roadside bomb.

Sean was born on February 2nd, 1981, in San Diego at the Naval Hospital as his father was on active duty at that time

Oregon Health Care Advocates Praise Children`s Health Care Bill

OSPIRG joins nurses, families and health care advocates urging passage of the Healthy Kids Plan.

(SALEM) - With Oregonians facing sharply rising health insurance costs, Oregon State Public Interest Research Group joined with nurses and other health care advocates Monday to applaud a bill aimed at making children’s health coverage affordable for all Oregon families.

“Gov. Kulongoski, Senator Monnes Anderson and Representative Greenlick are doing the right thing by advancing this smart plan for Oregon’s children,” said Laura Etherton, OSPIRG consumer advocate.

The plan comes in response to the fact that nearly 118,000 Oregon children go without health insurance.

Over 90% of uninsured children come from families in which at least one parent works, but steeply rising insurance costs put coverage out of reach.

Parents Invited to Salem-Keizer Internet Safety Workshop Tonight

The Salem-Keizer School District want to help you protect your children from internet crimes.

(SALEM) - The Salem-Keizer School District is holding a Internet Safety Workshop Monday night to help parents protect their children from internet crimes.

Presenters include representatives from the following organizations: Salem & Keizer Police Departments, Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Salem-Keizer School District and the Oregon Department of Justice Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.

Admission is free, registration is not required, and childcare will not be provided.

Kiplinger`s Magazine Ranks University of Oregon Among Nation`s 100 Best

The rankings, which appear in the February issue of the magazine, are based on data provided by more than 500 public four-year colleges and universities.

(EUGENE) - The University of Oregon ranks among the 100 best public colleges in the nation according to Kiplinger's Personal Finance Magazine.

The University of Oregon, which moved up seven places from last year's ranking, is the only public university in the state to make the 2007 list.

According to Kiplinger's website, they "were looking for schools that were academically strong as well as affordable.

In their scoring, academic quality carries more weight than costs (almost two-thirds of the total). We used academic-quality scores and average debt at graduation to break ties."

Oregon Records it`s Lowest Rate of Tobacco Sales to Minors

The highest rates of sales to minors occurred at mini marts, small food markets and gasoline stations.

(SALEM) - Coming off the most encouraging results ever, Oregon this month begins a new round of unannounced visits to the state's tobacco retailers to check compliance with laws forbidding sales to minors.

In the 2006 inspections, clerks at 11 percent of the 489 retailers visited sold to minors.

That is the state's lowest recorded rate in the 12 years of the program.

Counties in which 10 or more retailers were visited, and in which the sales rates were equal to or better than the 11 percent statewide rate, were Benton, Coos, Deschutes, Jackson, Jefferson, Josephine, Klamath, Lincoln, Linn, Wasco and Washington.

If a state records a sales rate of more than 20 percent, it can lose up to 40 percent of its federal substance abuse prevention and treatment block grant.

(TOPEKA, Kan.) - Senator Sam Brownback (R-Kansas) Sunday filed paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission establishing a presidential exploratory committee.

“I have decided, after much prayerful consideration, to consider a bid for the Republican nomination for the presidency,” said Brownback.

Sam Brownback is the senior senator from Kansas, having succeeded Bob Dole in 1996 after serving in the House of Representatives.

Oregon State Police, Salem Police Plan Capitol Mall Crosswalk Enforcement This Week

The citation for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk is $243.

(SALEM) - If your commute this week takes you around the Capitol Mall in Salem, Be Aware! that the Oregon State Police and Salem police will be out looking for drivers violating pedestrian safety laws.

Officers will also be targeting pedestrians who are violating traffic safety laws.

A crosswalk exists at every intersection, even if it is not marked.
