Oregon Governor Opposes Increased Troop Levels in Iraq

Governor Kulongoski urges the President to consult with governors on Iraq strategy.

(SALEM) - In a letter sent Wednesday, Governor Ted Kulongoski expressed his "strong" opposition to the President's proposal to increase troop levels in Iraq as part of his revised strategy.

The Governor highlighted that any increase in troops could ultimately impact Oregon's National Guard troops here at home who have already served and the length of deployment for those currently serving overseas.

Oregon Constitution Party Calls For End to U.S. Occupation in Iraq

President Bush Wednesday night ordered an additional 21,500 soldiers to Iraq.

(GRANTS PASS) - The Constitution Party of Oregon is calling for an end to U.S. occupation in Iraq.

Jack Alan Brown, Jr., Constitution Party of Oregon Chairman, said, “We live in a republic, not a dictatorship. After listening to the President last night declare his unilateral power to make war, one could wonder if he knows the difference.”

The U.S. Constitution is clear, the Congress is vested with the exclusive power to fund and regulate our military, as well as the power to declare war. Conversely, the President has none of those powers.

(SALEM) - The Oregon Department of Transportation is urging residents in the central and southern Willamette Valley to avoid travel Thursday morning unless absolutely necessary due to icy conditions on highways throughout the region.

Approximately 3 to 4 inches of snow fell in the Willamette Valley and along the Oregon coast overnight.

The snow is ahead of an Arctic cold front that is expected to bring clear skies and freezing temperatures, which will solidify the snow and exacerbate the already slick roads.

Boise Cascade Announces Plans to Close And Convert Salem Facility

Boise's corrugated container plant at 2121 Madrona Ave SE will continue to operate in Salem.

(BOISE, Idaho) - Boise Paper, a business unit of Boise Cascade, LLC, announced Tuesday that it will close its paper converting facility located in Salem.

The converting operations will be phased out over the next nine months with permanent closure scheduled for the end of the third quarter 2007.

The company plans to sell the property.

About 100 people are expected to lose their jobs.

20-Year-Old Arrested in Hit-And-Run That Critically Injured Salem School Bus Driver

65-year-old Gary Curtis Phillips, the victim in this accident is still listed in Critical Condition at Salem Hospital.

(SALEM) - At 6:05 AM on the morning of January 8th, Gary Phillips, a school bus driver for the Salem Keizer School District, was struck and critically injured while crossing Hawthorne Ave. NE, at D St. NE, in Salem.

The driver of the car that struck Phillips fled the scene.

Today, at 11:50 AM, Ofc. T.J. Kistner a patrol officer, located the involved car at the Lancaster Commons Apartments, in the 2300 block of Coral Ave. NE, in Salem.

The involved car is a 1996 Plymouth Breeze, light metallic green in color.

The car is registered to the parents of the listed suspect.

The investigation led to the arrest of Corey James Duffield, 20 years of age, at 2:20 PM Tuesday.

Duffield has been charged with: Fail to perform the duties of a driver involved in an injury accident, (Hit & Run) and Second Degree Assault, both felonies.

(SALEM) - Marcy Oral was getting up early Wednesday morning to have a cup of coffee, when she heard a crackling sound. She discovered a fire by the dryer. She alerted Robert Arevalo who was still sleeping in the home.

Mr. Arevalo stated, "I tried to put the fire out with a garden house, but the fire just got too big."

Salem Fire Department received the call for a structure fire at 3346 Sunnyview Road NE Space 33 on Wednesday, January 10th.

Report Card: Oregon Gets F For Fifth Year in a Row in Tobacco Prevention Funding

Data from the 2005 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System showed Oregon's adult smoking rate declining to 18.5 percent, a drop from 20 percent in 2004.

(SALEM) - Oregon received a failing grade in tobacco prevention funding for the fifth year in a row, according to the annual American Lung Association State of Tobacco Control report issued Tuesday.

The report graded the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico in four categories: smoke-free air, tobacco taxes, funding for tobacco prevention and restrictions on youth access to tobacco products.

In September 2006, Gov. Kulongoski announced that he would push for an increase of $0.845 in cigarette taxes in the 2007 legislative session.

Police Say 13-Year-Old Girl Lied About Attempted Abduction

Police said no charges will be filed.

(CANBY) - Canby police say the 13-year-old victim of the attempted abduction in Canby admitted to investigators that she was not truthful and the incident did not happen.

The victim reportedly has many personal issues happening at this time and did not state why she was not truthful.

The girl had told police that an unknown Hispanic male grabbed and attempted to forcefully drag her behind a vacant house located at N Holly Street and NW 6th in Canby.
