(KUNAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan) - The War in Iraq may dominate the headlines but as Tim King tells us in this next report, soldiers at remote outposts in Afghanistan are seeing plenty of action. Soldiers there say Taliban forces are afforded plenty of vantage points near the Pakistan border.

Jalalabad, like many bases in Afghanistan, was also a former stronghold of Soviet forces before the Taliban took over.

(KABUL, Afghanistan) - Afghanistan has been at war for more than 30 years. After the Russian invasion of 1979 that lasted for more than a decade, the country was locked into years of combat with the Taliban. Tim King visited a base that is used by the Afghan National Army, but as he tells us in this next report, signs of the Taliban's cruelty are far from gone.

Oregon Army National Guard Re-Designates, Changes Command, of Aviation Unit in Salem

Every year the Oregon Army National Guard's 1042nd Med. Co. (AA) supports dozens of search and rescue operations throughout the state.

(Salem) - As part of the Army's Transformation program, the Oregon Army National Guard re-designated one of their aviation units in a formal re-flagging ceremony at the Army Aviation Support Facility in Salem on Saturday.

The 1042nd Medical Company guideon will be ceremoniously cased symbolizing the deactivation of the unit and a new guideon will be uncased signifying the activation of Charlie Company 7/158 General Support Aviation Battalion.

The unit also changed command during the ceremony.

Governor Kulongoski Receives Chronology of State Support in Kim Search

The Governor will appoint a task force to review state and local facts and make recommendations to strengthen search and rescue efforts in Oregon.

(SALEM) - On Friday, the Oregon Office of Emergency Management delivered a report to Governor Kulongoski outlining the facts and timelines surrounding the efforts undertaken by state agencies to assist in the search for the Kim family last month in Southwest Oregon.

The Governor called for the report on December 22nd, and charged the Office of Emergency Management to lead the compilation of a chronology of steps taken by the primary state agencies participating in the search.

In Wake of James Kim Tragedy, Senator Feinstein Questions BLM Safety Protocols

The Kim family’s vehicle had been stranded when it was trapped in a snow bank on a BLM road that was supposed to be closed to the public, but was not properly secured.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) Friday questioned Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne on the consistency of the safety protocols used by the Bureau of Land Management.

The recent tragic death of California resident James Kim called attention to the inconsistency of the measures used by the BLM to manage and secure federal roads.

California resident James Kim perished over the Thanksgiving holiday trying to rescue his wife and two daughters.

In a letter to Secretary Kempthorne, Senator Feinstein urged the Department to determine whether BLM protocols were followed, or if new procedures need to be put in place.

Three Arrested After Police Find Drugs, Cash in Lebanon Home

This is the third drug related raid at this residence since April 2006.

(LEBANON) - The Linn Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at 525 Oregon Street in Lebanon Thursday morning.

Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller says officers seized methamphetamine, over $3,000 in cash, scales used to weigh drugs, and drug paraphernalia.

All three suspects are being held at the Linn County Jail on several charges.

Suspect Sought in Two Salem Convenience Store Robberies

The suspect is described as a Hispanic or white male, 18 - 20 years old, 5' 10 - 6'0, last seen wearing dark colored hooded sweatshirt, armed with a rifle.

(SALEM) - Salem police are asking for the public’s help in finding a suspect who robbed two northeast Salem convenience stores early Friday morning.

Salem police spokesman Lt. Dan Deitz says at approximately 1:59 AM, the Plaid Pantry at 1504 Broadway St. NE, reported an armed robbery.

Then at approximately 5:11 AM, the Circle K Store at 2459 Fairgrounds Rd. NE, also reported an armed robbery.

Senate President Courtney and Majority Leader Brown Announce Five-Point Plan For Ethics Reform

They say the [lan will bring comprehensive reform to ethics laws, including strict new gift limits and dedicated funding for ethics commission.

(SALEM) - Senate President Peter Courtney and Senate Majority Leader Kate Brown announced Friday a five-point ethics reform package for consideration in the 2007 legislative session.

Senate Bill 10 is sponsored by both Courtney and Brown, who are committed to making it one of the first priorities of the session.

“Oregonians expect ethics reform and we are committed to delivering it,” said Courtney (D-Salem/Gervais/Woodburn).

“Senate Bill 10 will be the first Senate bill to receive a hearing this session, and the Rules Committee will meet next Thursday to get to work,” said Brown (D-Portland), chair of the Senate Rules Committee.
