Movers Survey: More People Heading West, Leaving The Central Northeast

The findings by United Van Lines said Oregon was the No. 2 destination.

(ST. LOUIS) - A strong mobility pattern continued in 2006 as many Americans packed up their belongings and headed to the West and Southeast parts of the country, while the Central Northeast region of the country experienced an increase in residents departing.

The statistics are among the findings of United Van Line’s 30th annual “migration” study that tracks where its customers, over the last 12 months, moved from and the most popular destinations.

Capturing the No. 2-inbound ranking, Oregon (62.5%) sustained its 19-year, high-inbound trend.

Known for hospitality and gracious style, the Southeast states welcomed many new residents in 2006, with North Carolina coming in as the top destination.

(SALEM) - A fire Friday night in southeast Salem has displaced four families from the Village East Apartment complex. Fortunately no one was injured during the 11:00 PM fire and evacuation. One firefighter was taken to Salem Hospital with unknown injuries.

House Leaders Announce Gift And Travel Ban

(SALEM) - House Speaker-elect Jeff Merkley (D-Portland) has announced that a bipartisan group of House leaders would support a set of strict gift limits that would apply to House members and staff in the 74th Legislative Assembly which begins Monday.

These limits would ban the following gifts to legislators from groups or individuals with issues before the legislature.

The House Committee on Elections, Ethics, and Rules will also review the recommendations on ethics from the Public Commission on the Legislature.

Popular Salem Park to Close During Construction of New Water Treatment Facility

These improvements are required to be in effect on or before January 1st, 2010.

(SALEM) - Beginning Monday, River Road Park at 3045 River Road North will be closed for construction of the River Road Wet Weather Treatment Facility.

Major improvements to the park will also be completed during this period.

The Wet Weather Treatment Facility project is part of Salem's plan to comply with a Mutual Agreement and Order (MAO) by the Department of Environmental Quality in 1998 to reduce pollution in the Willamette River by eliminating sewer overflows that currently enter the river untreated during heavy winter storms.

Oregon Guard to Honor Governor With 19-Gun Salute, Fly-Over Monday

A military ceremony at 2:00 PM follows the Inauguration of Oregon's Governor, Ted Kulongoski to a second term in office.

(SALEM) - On Monday, following the Inauguration of Governor Ted Kulongoski for his second term as Governor and Commander in Chief of the Oregon National Guard, a ceremony will be held on the steps of the Oregon State Capitol Building.

One 19 gun howitzer salute will be performed by the Governor's Honor Battery, B Company, 218th Field Artillery from McMinnville.

During the ceremony, Court Street NE between Capitol Street NE and Winter Street NE will be closed to all traffic.

Salem Apartment Fire Displaces Four Families

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

(SALEM) - Late Friday night a fire at the Village East Apartment complex located at 241 Village East Way SE, displaced four families.

Two apartments sustained major damage with two others being too heavily smoke damaged to live in.

Apartment managers Angel and Rita Estrada were called to the scene at 11:13 PM, just minutes after a 911 call alerted Marion County firefighters of the fire.

The Red Cross provided emergency assistance to the displaced families by arranging for local hotel lodging and providing financial assistance for clothing, food and medication.

A city bus was brought in to use as a warm shelter for displaced apartment residents until lodging could be procured.

Scott Smith, a Red Cross volunteer for over five years said “This was a perfect example of people coming together to help their neighbors in need.”

Smith said that the bus provided a warm place for apartment residents to safely discuss their emergency needs. Smith added that the Estrada’s and another apartment resident, Nataly Arnautou were invaluable in the interview process.

Insurance Division, DHS to Introduce Health-Care Bills During The Upcoming Legislative Session

(SALEM) - The Oregon Insurance Division plans to introduce five bills in the Oregon Legislature's upcoming session, which convenes on Monday.

If approved the DHS bill would require employee benefit plans and health insurers to reimburse state Medicaid expenditures made for enrollees under specified circumstances.

The Oregon Insurance Division bills include discount medical plans, long-term care insurance, and a medical malpractice program for rural physicians.

Restored Bush School Library Murals Find New Home at North High

The two murals were painted and installed at Bush in 1938 through the Works Progress Administration federal art program.

(SALEM) - Members of Salem's art, business and school communities recently completed restoration of two historic Depression-era murals originally located at the old Bush Elementary School.

Over the winter break, the murals were reinstalled in the North Salem High School auditorium. The frames used were specially created for the murals' permanent exhibition.

The two murals -- “Alice in Wonderland” and “Arabian Nights' Entertainment” -- were painted in tempera on canvas and glued to the walls of the library at Bush.
Each arch-shaped painting was nine feet wide by six feet high. They were painted in a vivid 20th Century modern style, with expressionistic and surreal qualities.

In 2005 (almost 70 years later) the murals were in very good condition, but they faced an uncertain future.

Plans for the expansion of Salem Hospital -- and subsequent demolition of the old Bush Elementary building -- required relocation of the paintings.
