One Month Later: Investigators Still Seeking Suspects, Information on Florence Boatwright Murder

Florence and her Husband Joe had just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary two days before her tragic and senseless death Nov. 28th.

(SALEM) - One month ago Thursday, a southeast Salem neighborhood was shocked and dismayed over the death of a longtime resident and beloved friend Florence Boatwright.

Boatwright, 77, was found strangled Nov. 28th in her home at 403 45th Ave. SE, and investigators think the slaying occurred during a burglary.

Florence grew up in Salem and lived at the home for the past 50 years.

She was a long-time member of Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on State Street.

Salem Police Take Wanted Carjacking Suspect Into Custody

Police arrested 20-year-old Marco Antonio Villarreal after a short stand-off at a home in southeast Salem Christmas eve.

(SALEM) - A Salem man wanted by Linn County authorities for questioning in connection with an Albany carjacking and a Talbot Road armed robbery was arrested Sunday by Salem police at a home in southeast Salem.

Salem police took 20-year-old Marco Antonio Villarreal into custody on an unrelated parole violation warrant.

Salem police spokesman Lt. Bill Kohlmeyer said they received an anonymous call from someone who said Villarreal was at the southeast Salem residence located on Buttonwood Court.

Kohlmeyer said it took officers about an hour to talk Villarreal out of the home.

Villarreal is a “person of interest” in an armed carjacking that occurred Dec. 15th outside the Albany Mervyn’s and an armed robbery on Talbot Road that occurred the following day.

Flood Advisory Issued For Willamette, Pudding Rivers

The Pudding River is expected to continue to rise today and is forecast to reach flood stage by 1:00 AM Thursday morning.

The Willamette River in Salem is forecast to rise to near 21.9 feet at 10:00 PM Wednesday after Tuesday’s heavy rains.

Salem Driver Injured After Truck Rolls Off Amity-Hopewell Highway

The driver was transported to Salem Hospital and is in stable condition police said.

(AMITY) - A Salem-area woman received non-life threatening injuries Tuesday morning after the commercial truck she was driving transporting small cement blocks rolled off Amity-Hopewell Highway about 1/2 mile north of Hopewell.

President Gerald Ford Dies at 93

Gerald Ford was America’s longest living president, followed by Ronald Reagan, who also died at 93.

(RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif.) - “My family joins me in sharing the difficult news that Gerald Ford, our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather has passed away at 93 years of age,” Mrs. Ford said in a brief statement issued Tuesday evening from Rancho Mirage, California. “His life was filled with love of God, his family and his country.”

President Ford was Nixon’s hand-picked successor, chosen to replace Spiro Agnew who also was forced from office by a bribery scandal in October 1973, becoming the Nation’s first unelected vice president appointed under the 25th amendment to the Constitution.

“My fellow Americans,” he said, “our long national nightmare is over. Our Constitution works. Our great republic is a government of laws and not of men. Here the people rule.”

He remains the only President to serve without being elected to either the presidency or vice presidency.

DUII Arrests, Fatal Crashes Up in Oregon Over Christmas Holiday

Expect extra DUII patrols on New Years Eve.

(SALEM) - Traffic-related deaths were slightly higher this year, and DUII arrests by Oregon State Police troopers were definitely higher, according to preliminary information gathered related to the Christmas holiday period.

OSP, ODOT and local police agencies are preparing for this weekend's New Year's Holiday extended weekend.

Preliminary information from ODOT's Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), between 6:00 PM, Friday, December 22nd, and 11:59 PM, Monday, December 25th, four people died in two separate fatal traffic crashes over the 78-hour holiday period.

OSU Study: Tobacco Industry Prevention Ads May Actually Have Negative Effects on Teens

Researchers found that there was a 12 percent increase in the likelihood that 10th-and 12th-grade students would become smokers if they watched prevention ads targeted at their parents.

(CORVALLIS) - Tobacco company-sponsored anti-smoking advertising aimed at youths not only has no negative effect on teen smoking, it may actually encourage youngsters to smoke, according to a study co-authored by an Oregon State University researcher.

Recent Rains Results in Sewer Overflow Into Willamette River in Salem

Signs have been posted warning people to avoid contact with the water in the Willamette River due to potentially high levels of bacteria.

(SALEM) - Recent rainfall combined with saturated ground conditions have resulted in the City of Salem overflowing diluted raw sewage into the Willamette River.

The gates at the North River Road diversion structure were opened at approximately 8:44 AM.

Additionally, the Union Street diversion structure activated at approximately 10:06 AM.

Winter Whale Watch Now Underway Along The Oregon Coast

Gray whales are the predominant whales seen along the Oregon Coast.

(NEWPORT) - Winter Whale Watch Week has begun along the Oregon coast.


During winter Whale Watch Week, Dec. 26th through Jan. 1st, 2007, trained volunteers are available at 28 sites along the coast from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

18,000 whales will pass by in 4 weeks, mid-December to mid-January.

The main body is about 5 miles off shore, but many are seen 1 to 2 miles off shore.
