Oregon’s Unemployment Rate Down Slightly in August

The U.S. unemployment rate was 4.7 percent in August, about the same as during the past eight months when the rate was between 4.6 percent and 4.8 percent.

(PORTLAND) - Oregon’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in August was essentially unchanged at 5.5 percent, from 5.6 percent in July.

The state’s unemployment rate has been stable this year, with the rate staying between 5.3 percent and 5.6 percent for the first eight months of the year.

Statement from Oregon National Guard Colonel Cameron Crawford on Fallen Oregon Soldier Brad Lindsey

Oregon Guard Sergeant Brad Lindsey of Tigard died over the weekend in Afghanistan when his Humvee was attacked by Taliban militia. His family released these pictures and complimented the Portland news media for their sensitivity and good ethical treatment of their son's story.

Fugutives Sought in Kidnapping Case Captured in Arkansas After Year-long Manhunt

During the investigation it was also learned that the Maez's had two younger children living with them.

(PORTLAND) - Michael and Terry Maez were captured earlier this week in Waldron Arkansas after an 11-month manhunt. The suspects were wanted by the Washington County Sheriff's Office on kidnapping and child abuse charges. They allegedly locked their 15-year-old daughter in a trailer after Mr. Maez assaulted her.

They later left the area without that daughter. Arrest warrants were issued for both parents and protective custody warrants were issued for their two minor children.

War Memorial in Salem is Drawing Criticism

Questions are in the air over the memorial's design and timing as wars overseas continue to rage.

(SALEM) - Erik Kesterson was a 28-year old helicopter pilot who was killed in Iraq during November 2003.

His parents, Clay and M.J. Kesterson, have spent countless hours since his death leading the drive to build a memorial to Erik and all of the other s lost in Iraq and Afghanistan.

But as the LA Times reports, the couple has run into a thicket of criticism about the project's timing and aesthetics.

(PEDEE) - A single vehicle crash Sunday at approx. 3:00 PM the Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a single-vehicle crash on Maple Grove RD northeast of Pedee.

(SALEM) - Today I visited the field of flags here at River Front Park in Salem, Oregon, the Healing Field. I didn’t anticipate what I would feel as I walked through the rows. I simply just went down there to take some pictures and to see all the flags.

I knew why they were doing the event. I knew it was for the remembrance of our fallen soldiers and the victims of 9/11. I was surprised, though, by the intense emotions I suddenly felt rising in me.

Canby Man Falls Near River`s Edge

Steep, winding trails, an injured patient, and plenty of Poison Oak made for a challenging but successful recovery.

(CANBY) - Canby Firefighters responded to a report of a leg injury at Molalla River State Park Sunday afternoon around 4:30. The park is located on the Willamette River near the Canby Ferry crossing.

Division Chief Troy Buzalsky of Canby says that when fire crews arrived, a friend of the victim met them at the entrance to a steep and narrow trail.

Oregon National Guard Soldier is Killed in Afghanistan

Sgt. Nathaniel Brad Lindsey was part of the military contingent based in Afghanistan until next summer.

(KANDAHAR, Afghanistan) - An Oregon National Guard soldier died after an attack by Taliban militants September 9th in Afghanistan's Zabul province.

Sgt. Nathaniel Brad Lindsey of Troutdale was on patrol with U.S. troops and members of the Afghan National Army when Taliban militants attacked either with improvised explosive devices or rocket propelled grenades, and small arms fire.

The attack took place mid-afternoon on Saturday near the town of Shajoy in Zabul province north of Kandahar province.

Healing Field in Salem on the 5th anniversary of September 11, 2001

The families of the fallen soldiers from Oregon will be able to take home the flags representing their loved one who has lost their life to Operation Iraqi Freedom of Operation Enduring Freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan.

(SALEM) - Several area groups are sponsoring a four-day Healing Field event for Salem’s Riverfront Park that runs through September 11th, 2006.

Since 2002, scores of Healing Fields have been displayed at many cities across the Country. The Mid-Willamette Valley has been chosen as one of fifteen communities across the United States to be host to a Healing Field this year.
