Fairgoers Encouraged to Sign-Up For Renewable Energy Program

Currently, just over 2,500 Salem residential and small business customers are signed up for renewable energy from PGE

(SALEM) - Beginning Friday. and running through September 4th, Salem residents and other PGE customers can sign up at the PGE Renewables Booth at the Oregon State Fair for renewable power for their homes or businesses.

The booth is in the "Green Ideas Forum" section of the fair, and will be staffed every day 4:30 PM to 10:00 PM weekdays, 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM weekends.

The booth is focusing on enrolling Salem residents as part of the Green Power Challenge issued by the Salem City Council in July.

Shooting on I-5 Closes Freeway

I-5 Northbound South of Albany Traffic Delayed For Officer Involved Shooting Investigation

(ALBANY) - Oregon State Police are involved in an officer involved shooting on Northbound Interstate 5 near mile post 232.

According to OSP, at about 12:48 PM, troopers were involved in a high risk traffic stop of a car on Interstate 5 near milepost 235, which ended north of Albany at Millersburg.

The trooper involved in the shooting was not injured, and one person is reported down.

(SALEM) - Working during the summer in Oregon, especially outdoors, can be uncomfortable when the temperature hits 90 degrees and above. Combine high temperatures, high humidity, and physical exertion, and you may develop a work-related heat illness.

The most severe heat-induced illnesses are heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If heat exhaustion is not treated promptly, the illness could progress to heat stroke, and possibly even death.

Workers on construction sites may be at greater risk for heat illness due to heavy exertion, enclosed operator cabs with poor air circulation, and prolonged exposure to the sun.

Hunters Asked to Avoid Wildfire Areas

Before heading afield, hunters are advised to find out if there are any large wildfires in their hunting areas.

(SALEM) - Currently, the map of Oregon is dotted with large fires and fire complexes. For their own safety and to avoid impeding firefighting operations, hunters would do well to avoid the sites of major fires, the Oregon Department of Forestry announced today.

Often, forest roads around a wildfire are closed to the public. And even on roads that remain open, hunters may encounter firefighting vehicles.

141st Annual Oregon State Fair Kicked Off Friday

The theme for this year’s Oregon State Fair is “Road Trip.”

(SALEM) - The 2006 Oregon State Fair opens its gates to fun, food and excitement on Friday, Aug. 25th. The 141st annual event runs through Labor Day, Sept. 4th, and offers big-name concerts, FREE parking and family entertainment throughout its 11-day run.

(SALEM) - A hot rod show at Adam’s Ribs in Salem this weekend saw some of the valley’s cleanest rides on hand, but the real reason for the gathering was to give a very special person a gift. Several recent car shows have been held to raise money for Becky Heuberger, who works at Adam’s Ribs.

Her baby Joshua was born with severe challenges and insurance just doesn’t cover all of it.

Flames Sweep Through Vacant Salem Home

Nobody was injured as the fire caused an estimated $50 thousand in damages in the vacant multi-family structure.

(SALEM) - Flames from a vacant house fire in Salem were extending up the backside of the 2-story multi-family structure at 1509 5th Street NE as firefighters arrived around 7:53 PM Thursday.

Marion County Courthouse Rededication Ceremony Set

It's been a long time since all of the employees of the regular courthouse shared the same space.

(SALEM) - A public ceremony to rededicate the Marion County Courthouse will be held Tuesday, September 5th at 2:00 PM.
The courthouse is located at 100 High Street NE in Salem.

Presiding Judge Paul Lipscomb will act as master of ceremonies for the event to mark completion of the restoration of the courthouse after extensive damage incurred late last fall.

Christopher Millis was convicted today of driving his pickup truck through the front doors of the courthouse November 12th, firing shots into offices, and setting fires inside.

City Personnel Encouraged to Prepare for Possible Pandemic

(SALEM) - The federal government is recommending that state and local governments, businesses and individuals prepare pandemic flu plans this year.

Although no one knows whether the Avian Flu will result in a pandemic, historically, pandemics occur on a cyclical basis. Three of the most notable ones in the United States occurred in 1918, 1957 and 1968.

The suggestions the city is setting forth for its employees are wise for all residents to pay attention to and follow.
