Civil Air Patrol Nearing End of Seismic Survey

Civil Air Patrol wings from several state are participating.

(SALEM) - The Oregon Wing of the Civil Air Patrol, along with other CAP Wings, is nearing completion of it's participation in an extensive six state seismic survey mission in cooperation with the United States Geological Survey and the and the California Office of Emergency Services Clearinghouse that is being conducted from August 16th through August 31st.

The CAP in Oregon was operating out of Willamette Aviation at the Aurora State Airport as well as bases in Medford, and Eugene. Other CAP wings (states) participating in the exercise were California, Alaska, Hawaii, and Nevada with Oregon covering targets in Washington as well.

Salem Fire Responds to Reported Drowning (UPDATE)

Officials say 17-year old Jose Eduardo Gonzalez-Maciel slipped beneath the water in a pond off Cherry Avenue NE.

(SALEM) - Salem Fire received a report of a possible drowning Saturday evening at 7:44 PM. The caller said a 17-year old boy had failed to surface from a pond near the Home Depot store at 3021 Cherry Avenue NE.

Salem Fire Spokesman Bill Holmstrom says crews arrived on scene and put two rescue swimmers in the water. Unable to locate the victim, Salem requested the assistance from the Newburg Fire Department dive time.

Witnesses reported that the 17 year old male identified as 17-year old Jose Eduardo Gonzalez-Maciel went below the surface and did not return.

Oregon Comes Out In Support of Hood River Family (UPDATE)

(HOOD RIVER) - Oregon residents turned out en masse in Hood River today to drown out a hate group that did their best to disrupt the funeral of an Oregon Navy SEAL who was killed recently in Iraq.

The August 2nd 2006 death of 28-year old Marc Lee was the first suffered in Iraq by the Navy’s elite commando force.

City, Willamette University Set to Renovate Salem`s First City Library

New life for a Salem landmark.

(SALEM) - Willamette University soon will return the Carnegie Building to its position as a prominent community resource through a series of renovations by the Willamette University College of Law.


The college recently received $300,000 in new foundation grants to help transform the building into the Oregon Civic Justice Center, which will house the college’s Clinical Law Program, the Oregon Law Commission, the Center for Law and Government and the Willamette Law Review.


“We will restore this magnificent building to its former elegance and glory,” said Symeon C. Symeonides, dean of the College of Law.

3-Year-Old Boy, Playing With a Lighter, Starts Apartment on Fire

Damage to the apartment complex was estimated to be over $100,000.

(SALEM) - The Salem Fire Department responded to a 9-1-1 call Friday for an apartment fire at 3235 Felina Avenue NE, the Woodbrook Apartments.

The first alarm came in at 10:50 AM.

The first alarm sent 3 Engines, 1 Ladder Truck, and a Battalion Chief.

First arriving fire fighters reported flames shooting from the roof.

A second alarm was dispatched at 10:53 AM bringing more fire apparatus and fire fighters to the scene.

OSP, Linn County Authorities Investigating Officer Involved Shooting Friday on Interstate Five

The suspect who was shot remains in critical condition Friday night at a Corvallis Hospital.

(ALBANY) - Oregon State Police Criminal Investigations Division detectives, in conjunction with Linn County DA Office and Linn County Sheriffs Office, are continuing the investigation into Friday afternoon's officer-involved shooting on Interstate 5 northbound near milepost 236.

Oregon State Police spokesman Lt. Gregg Hastings says at 12:48 PM, OSP Trooper Russell Decker and Senior Trooper Huff Meyer initiated a high risk traffic stop on a black small car on the right shoulder.

Thieves Steal Fire Truck Used to Fight Forest Fires

The Chevrolet flatbed truck, equipped with a 500-gallon water tank, firehose reel, Honda pump and foam unit, is worth an estimated $20,000.

(SPRINGFIELD) - Because their workplace is outdoors, forest operators are accustomed to theft and vandalism. But Rod Surcamp never expected thieves to go so far as to steal his ability to fight fire.

"For whatever reason – joyriding, stripping the material - someone decided to come in and take our truck," the owner of Springfield-based Surco Log, Inc., said.

Sometime last Saturday evening, Surcamp's fire engine was stolen from Weyerhaeuser Corporation forestland southwest of Lorane in Lane County, where his company was processing logs under contract.
