19 Hearing Impaired Students That Were Missing Walk Back to Camp

The students, all from different parts of the country, had a nurse in their party and they are described as "well equipped."

(MILL CITY) - Linn County Sheriff Tim Mueller reports a group of 19 hearing impaired youth that were overdue and presumed lost turned up at their camp in the Santiam State Forest south of Mill City.

The group was reported overdue at 8:40 PM yesterday by one of their leaders who was able to walk out and call for help. The youths are juniors and seniors in high school and are well equipped according the team's leader.

Everyone in the group was hearing impaired, raising the challenge for searchers accustomed to being able to call out to people. The team leader that went for help was the only individual with the group who can speak.

Oregon`s Food Stamp Program Achieves a Record-High Accuracy Rate, Receives Praise from Federal Government

The federal government is happy that the state's scrutiny of poor people needing food assistance is more accurate than ever.

(SALEM) - For the first time in a decade Oregon's food stamp benefit accuracy rate exceeds the national average and is now one of the top-ranked programs in the nation, the Oregon Department of Human Services announced today.

"This is particularly good news because it comes at a time when the number of Oregonians receiving food stamps is at an all-time high," said DHS Director Bruce Goldberg, M.D.

Oregon Ranked Third Best State For E-Government

Good news for Oregon; as state is one of the top three for government Internet technology.

(PROVIDENCE, R.I. ) - Texas and New Jersey are the best states for e-government in the United States, according to the seventh annual e-government analysis conducted by researchers at Brown University. The federal portal FirstGov.gov and the Department of Agriculture are the most highly rated federal sites.

Darrell M. West, director of the Taubman Center for Public Policy at Brown University, and a team of researchers examined 1,564 state and federal sites.

Crash Leads to Power Outage and Grass Fire Near Sutherlin

(ROSEBURG) - State troopers say the driver of a pickup attempting to retrieve a CD lost control Monday afternoon and crashed into a power pole, leading to the closure of Interstate 5 and a power outage in the Sutherlin area. Oregon State Police cited the driver for Careless Driving.

Around 12:45 PM Monday, a 2003 Ford pickup driven by 21-year old Derek G. Matthews of Roseburg, was northbound on Interstate 5 near milepost 131 when he reportedly was retrieving a CD from the passenger floorboard.

The pickup left the roadway and went up and over a 20 foot embankment on the right shoulder prior to crashing into a large power pole. The pole was sheared off at the bottom.

Wyden, Smith Win Critical Committment for County Funding

The senators say it is great news for Oregon's rural communities.

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - U.S. Senators Ron Wyden and Gordon Smith have secured a commitment from the Administration to work to enact a one-year, fully-funded extension of the county payments safety net under the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act.

The agreement represents a significant shift in the Administration’s stance on the county payment program.

An extension would provide up to $401 million nationally for 700 rural counties in more than 40 states. Oregon’s share, combined with receipts from federal timber sales, could total approximately $270 million.
