Wyden Blocks Two Interior Department Nominees Over County Payments Funding

Senator keeps promise to block Administration nominees until there is an acceptable way to fund county payments.

(WASHINGTON D.C.) - U.S. Senator Ron Wyden, keeping his promise to block Administration nominees until there is “an acceptable way to fully fund county payments,” today placed a “hold” on the nominations of two Interior Department nominees: John Ray Correll, nominated to be Director of the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement, and Mark Myers, nominated to be a Director of the United States Geological Survey.

The county payments law provides vital funding for rural schools, roads and county services across the nation; Oregon counties will receive $1.6 billion in county payments funding over the life of the original bill, which expires later this year.

Governor Promotes Hydrogen Economy For Oregon

(SALEM) - Governor Ted Kulongoski expressed strong support for hydrogen energy technology Monday, and directed Oregon’s Department of Energy to develop strategies for moving Oregon toward a "hydrogen economy."


"Hydrogen holds great promise and offers great possibilities, including clean energy, good jobs, and a healthy environment," the Governor told a conference sponsored by the Northwest Hydrogen Alliance. "I will direct Oregon’s Director of the state Department of Energy to develop a strategy to move our region toward a hydrogen economy."

Chemeketa Hopes Voters Will Pass $89 Million Bond Levy in November

Chemeketa is one of 82 percent of national nursing program that lack the capacity to meet enrollment demand.

(SALEM) - Chemeketa Community College’s Board of Education has approved a resolution asking voters to approve an $89 million bond levy in November that will finance capital construction and improvements to existing buildings.

If voters approve the levy, the estimated cost to taxpayers would be 27-cents per $1,000 of assessed value. For a taxpayer with a $150,000 home, the estimated cost would be $40.50 per year.

“We believe that Chemeketa is making a real difference to the citizens of Salem, and these facilities will help meet our area’s education and training needs over the next several years,” said JoAnne Beilke, Chairperson of the board.

Center Street Bridge Project Continues on Schedule

The Center Street Bridge project is progressing as planed city officials said Friday.

(SALEM) - The stream diversion switched from the west side to the east side so that demolition of the center pier of the old bridge could be completed.

Work on the new sewer line is underway.

The new sewer manhole is complete and bypass pumping of sewage around the construction site continues while the new line is being installed.

Pile driving for the new bridge has begun and may last for the next few weeks.

Police Arrest Two Suspects in Arizona`s Serial Shooter Case

More than 200 Phoenix police officers worked around the clock investigating more than 6,000 tips from residents who called in with information.

(PHOENIX, Ariz.) - Phoenix and city officials announced Friday morning the arrest of two men in connection with a series of shootings and killings dating back to May 2005.

Officers arrested Dale Hausner and Samuel Dieteman at an apartment complex in Mesa, Arizona, 15 miles east of Phoenix, late on Thursday following a tip, Phoenix Police Chief Jack Harris told a news conference.

Authorities have said the so-called "Serial Shooter" is believed to be responsible for killing six people and wounding 17 others - mostly pedestrians and cyclists - since May 2005. The shooter also killed dogs and horses, and usually struck late at night.

First Presbyterian Church Hosting Community Worship Service at Salem’s Riverfront Park on Sun.

The weather forecast for Sunday is mostly sunny with highs in the upper 80’s.

(SALEM) - The First Presbyterian Church is holding a Sunday worship service at Salem’s Riverfront Park Amphitheatre on Sunday beginning at 10:00 AM.

The service is open to worshipers of all faiths and ages.

Those planning on attending should bring with them lawn chairs, blankets, and a picnic lunch.

Activities for kids are planned after the service.

Salem Police Seek Witnesses to Sikh Temple Vandalism

Salem Police say they aren't backing off on their search for the person or persons responsible for what many in the community see as a hate crime.

(SALEM) - Salem Police Lt. Bill Kohlmeyer says officers are continuing to investigate vandalism at the Sikh Temple, located at 860 Oakhill Avenue S.E. in south Salem early on the morning of July 27th.

Kohlmeyer says the incident happened around 6:30 AM. It involved the burning of the Sikh flag known as The Khanda, which is the emblem of the Sikh faith and beliefs.

It is believed that the act of vandalism was a hate crime because Sihks have been singled out since the attacks on the United States on September 11th, 2001.
