(SILVERTON) - The pain of losing a child never goes away. This case of ten-year-old Betty McCullough is a story passed on to family members since her disappearance in 1941.

Early morning, on June 21, 1941, little Betty woke up, slipped on a man’s shirt, put on her sister’s shoes, took a water bucket and quietly slipped by her two sleeping sisters. She was going to get water from the water pump outside. She was never seen again. No sign of her, no clues, nothing left behind.

(SALEM) - Most of us fail to recognize that the roots of our present-day Middle East Muddle can be readily tracked to World War I and the then-existing Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans supported the German Kaiser in that fateful war, against the British and French. What's left today is Turkey.

There's an old saying, "To the winner goes the spoils". Since the Ottomans bet on the wrong horse, their empire was carved up. Executing the political surgery was the League of Nations, which went out of business in World War II, only to be replaced by our modern-day UN. They were not the same group.

In an event, the Ottomans had their real estate taken away. To Britain went Transjordania (now Jordan) and Palestine (now Israel), while France took control of what we now call Syria and Lebanon. It is important to take note that these territories were overwhelming Muslim.

DEQ Issues Fine to Oregon State Hospital For Two Asbestos Violations

The violations stemmed from a January 2006 excavation project in which new underground pipelines were installed on the hospital grounds and the new pipelines were to be laid beneath the existing old, asbestos-covered pipelines.

(SALEM) - The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has hit the Oregon State Hospital in Salem with a $10,200, fine for two asbestos violations.

On January 18th, DEQ received a call from the hospital’s asbestos coordinator about possible mishandling of asbestos-containing material at the excavation site.

DEQ staff inspected the site that day and learned that the original work plan called for excavating the area around the old water pipelines...

Salem Man Arrested, Drug Enforcement Agents Seize One Pound of Meth

A pound of meth police say they found in a hidden compartment, has a street value estimated in excess of $40,000.

(REDMOND) - Agents from the Central Oregon Drug Enforcement Team found a pound of methamphetamine worth over $40,000 in a hidden compartment of a van in the parking lot of the Redmond Wal-Mart on Friday.

The driver of the van, 33 year-old Jose Perez-Chavez, of Salem, was arrested on multiple charges and taken to the Deschutes County Jail.

Candidate for Governor says Federalizing the National Guard is a Bad Idea

Starrett says the silence of Ted Kulongoski and Ron Saxton over the continued abuse of Oregon National Guard troops is absolutely deafening.

(WILSONVILLE) - Former TV personality Mary Starrett, who is running a campaign for Governor in Oregon, says state governors must fight the passage of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2007. "This thinly veiled attempt by the U. S. Congress to federalize the National Guard is a bad idea!"

In response to this federal attempt to remove state power, twenty-four members of the National Governors Association wrote to the U.S. House Armed Services Committee to express their concerns.

In the letter, they said, “The nation's governors feel very strongly about protecting our constitutional responsibility to take care of our citizens, and do not want that responsibility shifted to federal officials.”

Glen has been involved in writing and art since he was in elementary school, staying the course through his graduation from the Indiana University with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art.

A bicycle ride to Oregon in 1975 introduced Glen to the place that would later become his home. When his wife finished medical school, Salem was chosen as a great place to put down their roots.

Salem Man Dies in Early Morning Crash

(SALEM) - A single car crash on River Road South claimed the life of one man early this morning. It happened shortly before 3:00 AM this morning.

Unattended Candle Fire Causes Minor Explosion in Apartment

Nobody was hurt in the Saturday afternoon fire.

(SALEM) - Fire investigators say a candle left lit and unattended caused a fire and explosion in an apartment located at 3341 Ratcliff Dr. SE in Salem.

Deputy Fire Chief Joe Parrott says the occupants of the apartment left at about 8:00 am. At 3:35 pm Salem firefighters were called to a report of an explosion in the apartment.

The investigation revealed that the lit and unattended candle was under a medicine cabinet in the bathroom. Heat from the candle ignited the cabinet.

City of Salem Wants Public`s View Regarding Watershed

(SALEM) - The City of Salem Public Works Department will be conducting a phone survey of residents living within the Pringle Creek Watershed this summer. The purpose of the survey is to measure the public values about the watershed in which they live and survey the public's habits and how they affect watershed health.

The Pringle Creek Watershed covers an area 13.3 square miles in size and is located in southeast Salem. It contains a mixture of residential, commercial, and industrial uses. Like other communities, Pringle Creek has been highly impacted by urbanization.

The public opinion survey is part of a larger effort in developing the Pringle Creek Watershed Management Plan.
